I recently met up with an old boss and mentor of mine for a drink. As well as discussing the recession of my hairline and prominence of my sideburns in the years that have passed, we inevitably started talking shop.
Going back to when I was his Online Marketing Manager, he didn?t really care how I got results, as long as I got them. He was a traditional marketer and as long as he knew he could put in a penny to get a pound out the other side, who cared how I did it?
A couple of things have changed since those days.
Firstly my friend is now a marketing consultant and secondly, search is no longer a marketing discipline to be trialled out by a lone operative, it?s a mainstay in marketing plans up and down the land. So, this means my friend now needs to know exactly how the results are achieved.
The conversation quickly moved on to link building as he enquired how much it had changed during my time at Epiphany and if it has much impact on a search campaign.
The answer to both questions was, of course ?massively?.
I?ll give you the short version, as we went around the houses talking about Penguins and a bloke called Vince among other things, before I showed him some a couple of the recent examples we?d launched for our clients:
Saftestyle ? The Secret Door
Marisota ? Mother of the Bride
Castle Cover ? David Bowie
He mused through each of these and then very succinctly summed it up for me: ?So, really, you just have to ask yourself a couple of questions? Why is that content appearing on that site? And why would I link to it??
He was right, ultimately that is what your target personas who might link to your site will be asking and more importantly this is what Google will be asking.
And with that, he offended me once more on my hairline, complimented me once more on my sideburns and, for the first time ever, he said ?Google seems to make sense to me now?.
