Once upon a time there was child whose parents named her Thing 2.
This was not for keeping her identity a secret, but her parents were hippies and when the birth mother was jonesing for some kale chips and organic fro-yo, she began her complete collection of Doc Seuss?s books and fell in love with the name. Plus, they thought ?Thing 1? would have too much negative stigma for a child.
When Thing 2 got into grade school, because her parents don?t remember her younger years from abusing their bodies with so much drugs, herbs and grain fed chicken in college, we will jump ahead in the plot.
Thing 2 began to show signs of acting out. Not in a negative way ? but in an earthy, creative, dance around in a fast circle like Stevie Nicks, while strewing her 7 year-old scarves and magic capes around for anyone who would watch.
Thing 2 was always searching for her audience.
Her parents enrolled her in acting classes so she could be a ?white, winged dove? whenever she desired and not feel ostracized for doing so. In fact, Thing 2 excelled in the theatre programs.
Her birth mother and sperm donor struggled to understand what was fact or fiction with their daughter. Thing 2?s acting skills were so convincing, they had to set firm rules with her and consequences for when she would tell stories which were fictional, yet claim they were the truth.
Normally, this would work at home. Thing 2 was afraid of losing privileges from family game night or story time. These were her favorite pastimes, especially since the family believed the television was the devil.
So when the birth mother was called on the landline by Thing 2?s school nurse, who said she needed to be picked up immediately, the birth mother asked what the reason was.
?Thing 2 came into the nurse?s room this morning complaining of a stomachache and then went back to class,? the nurse reported.
?I see,? said the birth mother.
?But then she left the lunch room without eating her lunch, complaining of the same thing,? the nurse said. ?Normally, when children leave the cafeteria without eating, there is a problem. Plus, we?ve had a lot of stomach bugs this week.?
?I will come over to talk with her,? the mother replied.
When the birth mother arrived, she went to the back room where her daughter was laying down -legs crossed, foot tapping and singing a song that she obviously was composing. As soon as she saw her mother, Thing 2?s affect changed and she moaned, ?Mama, my stomach hurts so much!?
The birth mother said to the child, ?Did you eat the Pizza they were serving today at lunch??
?No, I was afraid to eat it without taking my Lactaid first,? said Thing 2.
?Here. (handing her a tablet from her backpack) Take this Lactaid, go back to the cafeteria and finish your lunch. Then go back to class,? said the mother.
The nurse interrupted, ?She really seems sick to me. Many of the kids here are getting this.?
?Did you poop today?? the birth mother threw out to the child without any discretion.
?I tried, but I can?t. I was afraid to eat the pizza,? Thing 2 said.
Before the birth mother could interject again, the school nurse forced her hand and insisted the child go home since it appeared she was ill and had been in the office twice that day.
?I see,? said the mother.
As the child and mother traveled home in their Volkswagen bus, with painted flowers and peace signs on the sides, no words were spoken. They quietly entered their modest home. The mother suggested Thing2 get into her pajamas and go straight to bed to rest.
Five minutes later, Thing 2 came out in her Stevie Nicks outfit complete with flowing cape and shouted triumphantly I?m going outside to make a flower head wreath.
Poor Thing 2.
Since she was so ?sick? she had to stay in bed all afternoon, with nothing to do but rest. And when the rest of family had a gluten free pizza with wild mushrooms, which was Thing 2?s favorite, she had to have vegetable soup.
Poor, poor, sick child! Oh, and she had to go to bed early too, so as to have extra time to heal.
Good news though?Thing 2 made a miraculous recovery the next morning. She was up early and excited to go to school. Thank goodness she only had the 24hr kind of bug!
