Syria's cultural heritage among threatened sites

NEW YORK (AP) ? The cultural heritage of Syria and the Gateway Arch in St. Louis are among the diverse cultural heritage sites threatened by neglect, overdevelopment or social, political and economic change, a preservation group announced Tuesday.

The World Monuments Fund's watch list for 2014 includes 67 sites in 41 countries and territories, from Japan to the United States.

The New York-based group has issued its watch list every two years since the mid-1990s to call attention to important landmarks threatened around the world in an effort to promote awareness and action. The list is assembled by a panel of experts in archaeology, architecture, art history and preservation.

"Some sites are famous, others struggle for recognition," said Bonnie Burnham, president of the organization. "It is our goal to help as many as possible.

"For some sites, inclusion in the Watch is the best chance to survive."

The list cited escalating violence in Syria for the devastating effect on some of its monuments, including the citadel of Aleppo and the fortress of Qa'lat al-Mudique.

Eero Saarinen's Gateway Arch, a mid-century modern structure, was at risk due to "encroaching corrosion," the result of the challenges its extreme height and design presented for its preservation, the group said.

It also singled out the Hudson River Palisades, saying the planned construction of a commercial building nearby would spoil views from the cliffs on both the New Jersey and New York sides of the river.

Among the list are three former industrial sites in England ? the Grimsby Ice Factory, Battersea Power Station and Deptford Dockyard ? obsolete structures the fund said could be converted for cultural and community purposes.

The list also includes Yangon, Myanmar, whose religious structures and late 19th- and early 20th-century colonial buildings were threatened with destruction from the demand for commercial and residential properties, the fund said.

U.S. sites on the list also included sculptor Donald Judd's buildings at The Chinati Foundation, a contemporary art museum in Marfa, Texas; Frank Lloyd Wrights' Taliesin in Spring Green, Wis.; and woodworker George Nakashima's house and workshop in New Hope, Pa. The modern heritage sites were included because they all require creative approaches to their conservation, the fund said.

Also on the watch list are places threatened by what the fund called "large-scale cruise-ship tourism." It said Venice, Italy, was a dramatic example of that, and said it hoped that placing the ancient city on the list would lead to an analysis of the adverse impact large vessels were having on the environment.

Attack on Jerusalem graves unnerves Christians

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Christian leaders in Israel are up in arms over what they say is a string of relentless attacks on church properties and religious sites ? most recently the desecration of a historic Protestant cemetery where vandals toppled stone crosses from graves and bludgeoned them to pieces.

The attack in the Protestant Cemetery of Mount Zion, one of Jerusalem's most important historic graveyards, has struck a particularly sensitive nerve because some of the damaged graves belong to important figures from the 19th and 20th centuries, a key period in Jerusalem's history. Among them are a German diplomat, the founder of a local orphanage who was a key contributor to modernizing the city, and a relative of the owners of a prominent Jerusalem hotel.

Though members of the clergy say interfaith relations between top religious leaders have never been stronger, and police have been more responsive to such attacks in recent years, they say attacks continue unabated. Some activists say not enough is being done to stop them.

"We are striving so hard to promote dignity and respect among the living. And here we have our dead people ... vandalized," said the Very Rev. Hosam Naoum, caretaker of the Protestant cemetery. "No human would agree with this."

Police arrested four young Israeli settlers from the West Bank last week, two of them minors, in connection with the cemetery attack, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. But Rosenfeld said the four were subsequently released until further questioning. No charges have been filed, and they are not under house arrest, he said.

Two of the suspects had been banned from entering the West Bank because of their connections to the "hilltop youth," a movement of young Jewish extremists blamed for a spate of attacks in recent years on mosques, Christian sites and Israeli army property to protest government policy.

The four suspects claimed they had entered the cemetery to immerse themselves in a ritual bath there, according to media reports. Rosenfeld could not immediately confirm the reports, and the record of the court session was sealed because minors were involved.

Naoum said the reported alibi was suspect. An ancient Jewish ritual bath was excavated on the premises but it contains no water, and an old well nearby has a narrow opening and would be dangerous to enter, he said.

Naoum said he is reporting the events to the German and British embassies, which have representatives on the cemetery administration board, as well as to the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The attack joins a list of high-profile Christian sites that have been vandalized within the past year. They include a Trappist monastery in Latrun, outside Jerusalem, where vandals burned a door and spray-painted "Jesus is a monkey" on the century-old building, a Baptist church in Jerusalem, and other monasteries. Clergymen often speak of being spat at by ultra-Orthodox religious students while walking around Jerusalem's Old City wearing frocks and crosses.

Christian citizens of Israel, including Roman Catholic and Orthodox streams of Christianity, make up less than 2 percent of its nearly 8 million people. About three-quarters of them are Arabs, and the others arrived during a wave of immigration from former Soviet Union countries that began 20 years ago. Tens of thousands of Christian foreign workers and African migrants also live in Israel.

Over the past three years, 17 Christian sites in the Holy Land have been reported vandalized, according to Search for Common Ground, a nongovernmental group that monitors press reports of attacks on local holy sites.

Researcher Kevin Merkelz said a police detective in charge of Christian affairs told the organization the numbers are actually higher, but Christian leaders chose not to report many attacks to the press.

"The Christians who are still here want to keep a low profile when attacked," said Merkelz. He said the group does not include sites in the politically sensitive Old City of Jerusalem in its survey, because many sites are in dispute and the group does not want to be seen as taking sides in conflicting claims to important properties.

Christian leaders are often afraid to complain to police because many clergymen reside in Israel on special visas and wish to keep good relations with authorities, said Hana Bendcowsky of the Jerusalem Center for Jewish-Christian Relations. "There is a very strong feeling that the police are not doing enough... and not doing work to prevent the phenomenon," she said.

Rosenfeld, the police spokesman, said Israeli police recently set up a task force to combat "nationalistic" motivated crimes, and last week arrested 14 youths in connection with attacks on Arabs.

He said police are carrying out more patrols around holy sites and are considering installing security cameras to protect them. He said the numbers of attacks against Christian sites, compared to other attacks on Arabs and their properties, were low.

"There is more awareness that holy areas have to be watched closer and protected better," Rosenfeld said.

The Rev. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, one of the Roman Catholic church's top officials in the Holy Land, said such attacks "have become routine and target not only Christians. They're conducted by extremists and go against the spirit of tolerance. But it's also true that they're strongly condemned by the Jewish community, by people opposed to them."

Rev. Naoum, the cemetery caretaker, said a group of 150 Jewish religious figures will be paying a solidarity visit to the cemetery this week.

In the oldest section of the Protestant Cemetery of Mount Zion, just outside the walls of Jerusalem's ancient Old City, the tops of large stone monuments, many written in German, were bare, and the stone crosses that used to top them lay broken into a few pieces.

Graves damaged belong to a British Mandate policeman and important figureheads in the city. The most notable of them is Johann Ludwig Schneller, founder of an orphanage and the most advanced printing press in 19th century Jerusalem. The grave of Ferdinand Vester, who built the house where a branch of the U.S. Consulate General to Jerusalem is located today and who was related to the founders of the storied American Colony Hotel, was also damaged.

The cemetery is "a microcosm of Jerusalem history from the 1830s till the present," said Amnon Ramon, an expert on Christianity at the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies.

Curiously, it is not the first time the Protestant cemetery has been attacked. About 100 years ago, the American consul to Jerusalem dug up graves in the cemetery belonging to members of the American Colony, a group of Christians from the U.S. who moved to Jerusalem for religious reasons - but whom the consul believed were involved in cult-like activities, said Israeli researcher Nirit Shalev-Khalifa. The group's home later became the American Colony Hotel.

There has always been a religious fight surrounding cemeteries in Jerusalem, Shalev-Khalifa said.

"This is a battle over the celestial Jerusalem," she said. "You can deal with the living, but sometimes it's easier to deal with the dead."

Craigslist murder victim remembered by coach, suspects denied bond

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Former classmates and teachers are remembering William "Alex" Apps. He graduated from Beaufort Academy in 2007.

"I hope they pay for it. It was such a senseless act to such a good guy with such a bright future," said Bill Dalton.

Dalton is among friends and teachers at Beaufort Academy mourning the loss of 25-year-old Apps.

Dalton said, "He [Apps] was at Beaufort Academy from 1st grade until he graduated."

The school's alumni Facebook page now has a photo album dedicated to the former student.

Apps' death is a blow to the community, but more so to his family.

Dalton said, "His father died when he was in high school. An awful lot of tragedy to have happen to one family."

Dalton was one of Apps' JV soccer coaches and A.P. history teacher. He still uses an essay written by Apps in 10th grade as an example to his students every year. Now Dalton says the essay will be a way for him to remember his former student.

"A lot of kids he went to school with still are back in town after college and so it was a hard day for us in Beaufort. I mean obviously anyone that young you don't expect to hear that they died," said Dalton.

Charleston County deputies say Apps was shot in the head Thursday after meeting up with Isaac Williams and Jquan Scott to sell his truck. The ad is still posted on Craigslist.

Dalton said, "The more I found out about it, the more irate I got about how incredibly stupid and pointless it was. He was just selling his truck and it just seems completely idiotic."

Dalton says Apps left a big impression on those he knew and loved and won't be forgotten.

"We're all going to miss him a lot," said Dalton.

Deputies say Apps' body was found Monday in the woods near McGrath Darby Boulevard in Mount Pleasant. They say Jquan Scott led them to the location after he was arrested.

According to the court affidavit released Tuesday, Apps was held at a home on Matthis Ferry Road and also driven around at gunpoint, before he was shot in the truck while being driven over the Ravenel Bridge.

Emotional bond court hearing for family of suspects and victim

Family of the victim William Apps were in court asking for the suspects to stay behind bars. Supporters of both suspects also spoke during the bond hearing.

"I love you and I know you wouldn't do something like this," said a family member as she spoke to Jquan Scott during the bond hearing.

As she spoke holding back tears, 19-year-old Scott was seen on the television monitor bent over in tears.

Tuesday night he was denied bond in connection with the murder of the College of Charleston graduate.

The second suspect, 20-year-old Issac Williams was also denied bond. His family and supporters spoke after the hearing.

Roger Daniels, a friend of Williams said, "He just told me he had to go test drive a car for a friend. That's all he said. I don't think he, I know he wouldn't kill nobody, so for him to sit there and be told you're denied bond, that's crazy. This ain't him, this ain't him. This is the type of man who wouldn't even kill a rat."

Tralane Bell a friend of Williams said, "He's just afraid to speak and he needs to tell the truth. He needs to not worry about being called a snitch."

Both suspects aren't expected to be back in court until early next year.

Apple to hold next iPad and Mac event on October 22, 2013

Apple will hold their next iPad and Mac event on Tuesday, October 22. That's according to John Paczkowski of the Wall Street Journal and fits with the time line I'm hearing as well. It also fits with what Apple did last year.

On the agenda will be the new iPad 5 we told you about back in January, the one that's as slim and thin as the iPad mini but still packs a 9.7 inch screen. Apple's been working on a Retina iPad mini as well, and if it's ready, it'll be shown off alongside its bigger brother.

Apple also has that brand new can't-innovate-anymore-Phil-Schiller's-ass Mac Pro to show off again, which should ship with OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

Still, with everything we think we know, there's a lot that still needs to play out - will there be a gold iPad? Colored iPad minis? Will the Apple A7 go A7X for the iPad 5? Will Touch ID make it onto either the full-sized or mini iPad?

Keep it locked to iMore for full coverage of Apple's next iPad and Mac event, everything leading up to it, and everything you need to know thereafter!

Arizona plans to require citizenship proof for state elections

By Tim Gaynor

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Arizona, long at odds with Washington over immigration policy, plans to require voters to show proof of citizenship to vote in state polls, even after it lost a high court battle to demand such documentation for federal elections.

The U.S. Supreme Court voted 7-2 in June to strike down a voter-registration law designed to stop illegal immigrants from casting ballots in the state, which borders Mexico and has been at the heart of the U.S. national battle over immigration.

The law had required would-be voters to show proof of citizenship both when registering to vote and when casting a ballot, but the court ruled that the measure was trumped by federal law.

On Monday, Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne spelled out the new policy in an opinion issued in response to a request from Secretary of State Ken Bennett, seeking clarification in light of the top court's ruling.

"Those who registered to vote using the federal form, which does not require evidence of citizenship, should not vote in state elections or sign petitions," Horne, a Republican, concluded in the 16-page opinion.

But he said the rules outlined in the Arizona voter registration measure, Proposition 200, were still valid for local elections.

"Persons seeking to register to vote must comply with Proposition 200's evidence of citizenship requirement in order to become ... eligible to vote in state and local elections and to sign candidates, initiative, referendum or recall petitions," he added.

Arizona's Republican leadership has taken a tough stance on illegal immigration. In 2010, Governor Jan Brewer signed a state law requiring police to question about their immigration status people that they stop and suspect of being in the country illegally.

Backers of Proposition 200, passed by voters in 2004, said the law was needed to fight voter fraud, although opponents said it unfairly deterred Latinos and Native Americans from registering to vote, as they sometimes struggled to come up with the required citizenship proofs.

State Democrats, who countered that Republicans who championed the measures aimed to make it harder for minority voters who tend to vote Democratic to cast ballots, said Horne's opinion tested "absurdity and vindictiveness."

"By recommending a two-track voting system, Horne will be creating a group of second-class voters in Arizona," DJ Quinlan, the executive director of the Arizona Democratic Party, said in a statement.

"This will also create another confusing layer of bureaucracy to our voting system and potentially cost Arizona taxpayers millions of dollars."

The only federal offices that will appear on Arizona ballots next year will be seats in the U.S. House of Representatives in the midterm congressional elections.

TREB Market Watch ? September 2013 - Toronto Real Estate News

Condo layout

Breaking down what makes a good layout is hard. People have different ideas of what is desirable and what is worth losing space over. Let?s take six difficult layout choices and find which work best for you:

1.?The bathroom
Shower, tub, or both?
Since housing prices are going up, many families are opting for a more suburban location, where bath tubs are more common, compared to the city core. The lifestyle of an urban apartment/condo dweller tends to be more fast paced, without time for a tub. Plus, most condo buildings have pools or a sauna included.

?

2.?The living room
Box-style or unique layout?
Angled and curved rooms may look dramatic but are a nightmare for furniture placement, leading to wasted space. This may, in some cases, loose the appeal of a buyer when you go to resell.

?

3. Window placement
Where should the sunlight go:?Bedroom, bathroom, or living space?
The location of windows in a unit can?make or break a space. It?s always more attractive to have windows in all of the bedrooms, as natural light increases the resale value of a unit.?However, most units see the majority of use in the living room. So, when choosing a layout look for window space that lets sunlight into as many rooms as possible.

4. Condo width
A wide or narrow unit?
Both styles have benefits. A narrow unit tends to keep the washer/dryer noise away from conversation areas and the bathroom out-of-view from the living room/kitchen seating. In contrast, a wide unit offers more window space and caters to those who enjoy an open concept design.

5.?Building floor plan??
Where on the floor should my unit be located?
One aspect that is often overlooked when choosing a unit is its location within the building floor plan. A unit within close proximity to the elevators can prove to be very frustrating, as noise levels tend to be high. Many purchasers have been disappointed to learn that, once they have moved into their condo, they are constantly bothered by the sound of the garbage falling down a nearby chute. Always ask your REALTOR? to show you the unit location within the entire floor plan.

?

6. Storage space
Big closet or little closet?
An efficient developer will ensure that there are no hollow walls and, wherever possible, will use built-in wall storage as a space saver. Walk-in closets are great but not worth sacrificing the precious space from an already cramped bedroom. Keeping the master bedroom as big as possible helps for resale value.
