Funerals become a routine in shattered Newtown

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? One by one by one by one, each with fresh heartbreak, hearses crisscrossed two New England towns on Wednesday, bearing three tiny victims of the Sandy Hook school massacre and a heroic teacher in a seemingly never-ending series of funeral processions.

"The first few days, all you heard were helicopters," said Dr. Joseph Young, an optometrist who attended one funeral and would go to several more. "Now at my office all I hear is the rumble of motorcycle escorts and funeral processions going back and forth throughout the day."

As more victims from the slaughter of 20 children and six adults were laid to rest, long funeral processions clogged the streets of Newtown, where Christmas trees were turned into memorials and a season that should be a time of joy was marked by heart-wrenching loss.

At least nine funerals and wakes were held Wednesday for those who died when gunman Adam Lanza, armed with a military-style assault rifle, broke into the school Friday and opened fire on their classrooms. Lanza killed his mother at her home before the attack and committed suicide at the school as police closed in.

At St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, mourners arrived for Caroline Previdi, an auburn-haired 6-year-old with an impish smile, before the service had even ended for Daniel Barden, a 7-year-old who dreamed of being a firefighter.

"It's sad to see the little coffins," said the Rev. John Inserra, a Catholic priest who worked at St. Rose for years before transferring to a church in Greenwich. He returned to his old parish to comfort families wondering how a loving God could permit such carnage, and has attended several of the funerals.

"It's always hard to bury a child," Inserra said of the seemingly unrelenting cycle of sorrow and loss. "But these are important moments, an opportunity to come together, to remember that we have new angels in heaven."

Hundreds of firefighters formed a long blue line outside the church for little Daniel's funeral. Two of his relatives work at the Fire Department of New York, and the gap-toothed redhead had wanted to join their ranks one day.

"If me being here helps this family or this community just a little bit, it's worth it," said Kevin Morrow, a New York firefighter and father of two young girls. "He wanted to be a firefighter, as any young boy wants to be."

Family friend Laura Stamberg, of New Paltz, N.Y., whose husband plays in a band with Daniel's father, said that on the morning of the shooting, Mark Barden taught his son to play a Christmas song on the piano.

"They played foosball and then he taught him the song and then he walked him to the bus and that was their last morning together," Stamberg said.

At Caroline's funeral, mourners wore pink ties and scarves ? her favorite color ? and remembered her as a Yankees fan who liked to kid around. "Silly Caroline" was how she was known to neighbor Karen Dryer. "She's just a girl that was always smiling, always wanting others to smile."

Across town, at Christ the King Lutheran Church, hundreds gathered for the funeral of Charlotte Helen Bacon, many wearing buttons picturing the 6-year-old redhead. Speakers, including her grandfather, told of her love of wild animals, the family's golden retriever and the color pink.

She was "a beautiful little girl who could be a bit stubborn at times ? just like all children," said Danbury resident Linda Clark as she left the service.

And in nearby Stratford, family and friends gathered to say goodbye to Victoria Soto, a first-grade teacher hailed as a hero for trying to shield her students, some of whom managed to escape. Musician Paul Simon, a family friend, performed "The Sound of Silence" at the service.

"She had the perfect job. She loved her job," said Vicky Ruiz, a friend since first grade. Every year, Soto described her students the same way, Ruiz said. "They were always good kids. They were always angels," even if, like typical first-graders, they might not always listen.

In Woodbury, a line of colleagues, students and friends of slain Sandy Hook Principal Dawn Hochsprung, 47, wrapped around the block to pay their respects to the administrator, who rushed the gunman in an effort to stop him and paid with her life. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan attended the service.

"She loved kids. She'd do anything to help them and protect them," said Joann Opulski, of Roxbury.

In emotion-charged Newtown, tempers flared as residents of the town of 27,000 navigated the hordes of reporters and camera crews that descended on the town. Some shouted at reporters outside the funerals Wednesday, urging them to leave their town in peace.

Cynthia Gubitos said the shooting and its aftermath have jolted what she described as a quintessential "Norman Rockwell, New England community."

"Nobody knew about Sandy Hook," Gubitose said as she placed flowers at a memorial with bouquets stacked chest-high. "Many of the people that live here like it that way."

The symbol of Christmas took on a new meaning in the town, where one memorial featured 26 Christmas trees ? one for each victim at the school.

Edward Kish said he bought a Christmas tree two days before the shooting, but hasn't had the heart to put it up or decorate it.

"I'll still put it up, probably," he said. "It doesn't seem right, and it doesn't seem like Christmas."

Mourners from across the country came to offer condolences. A jazz band from Alabama played at the main memorial site as local children played with a team of trained therapy dogs brought in to provide comfort.

The massacre continued to reverberate around America as citizens and lawmakers debated whether Newtown might be a turning point in the often-polarizing national discussion over gun control.

President Barack Obama pressed Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. He also called for stricter background checks for people who seek to purchase weapons and limited high-capacity clips.

"This time, the words need to lead to action," said Obama, who set a January deadline for the recommendations.

Authorities say the horrific events of Friday began when Lanza shot his mother, Nancy, at their home, and then took her car and some of her guns to the nearby school.

Investigators have found no letters or diaries that could explain the attack.

However, Connecticut's chief medical examiner, Dr. H. Wayne Carver, told The Hartford Courant he is looking for genetic clues that might explain the behavior, and is working with the University of Connecticut department of genetics.

Physicists achieve elusive 'evaporative cooling' of molecules

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Achieving a goal considered nearly impossible, JILA physicists have chilled a gas of molecules to very low temperatures by adapting the familiar process by which a hot cup of coffee cools.

Evaporative cooling has long been used to cool atoms, at JILA and elsewhere, to extraordinarily low temperatures. The process was used at JILA in 1995 to create a then-new state of matter, the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of rubidium atoms. The latest demonstration, reported in the Dec. 20, 2012, issue of Nature, marks the first time evaporative cooling has been achieved with molecules -- two different atoms bonded together.

JILA researchers cooled about 1 million hydroxyl radicals, each composed of one oxygen atom and one hydrogen atom (OH), from about 50 milliKelvin (mK) to 5 mK, five-thousandths of a degree above absolute zero. The 70-millisecond process also made the cloud 1,000 times denser and cooler. With just a tad more cooling to below 1 mK, the new method may enable advances in ultracold chemistry, quantum simulators to mimic poorly understood physical systems, and perhaps even a BEC made of highly reactive molecules.

The same JILA group previously used magnetic fields and lasers to chill molecules made of potassium and rubidium atoms to temperatures below 1 microKelvin. But the new work demonstrates a more widely usable method for cooling molecules that is potentially applicable to a wide range of chemically interesting species.

"OH is a hugely important species for atmospheric and combustion dynamics," says JILA/NIST Fellow Jun Ye, the group leader. "It is one of the most prominently studied molecules in physical chemistry. Now with OH molecules entering the ultracold regime, in addition to potassium-rubidium molecules, a new era in physical chemistry will be upon us in the near future."

JILA is a joint institute of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Colorado (CU) Boulder. The results are the first to be published from the first experiments conducted in JILA's new X-Wing, which opened earlier this year. JILA theorist John Bohn collaborated with Ye's group.

In evaporative cooling, particles with greater-than-average energy depart, leaving a cooler and denser system behind. Unlike coffee, however, the trapped hydroxyl molecules have to be tightly controlled and manipulated for the process to work. If too many particles react rather than just bounce off each other, they overheat the system. Until now, this was widely seen as a barrier to evaporative cooling of molecules. Molecules are more complicated than atoms in their energy structures and physical motions, making them far more difficult to control.

To achieve their landmark result, Ye's group developed a new type of trap that uses structured magnetic fields to contain the hydroxyl molecules, coupled with finely tuned electromagnetic pulses that tweak the molecules' energy states to make them either more or less susceptible to the trap. The system allows scientists not only to control the release of the hotter, more energetic molecules from the collection, but also to choose which locations within the trap are affected, and which molecular energies to cull. The result is an extremely fine level of control over the cooling system, gradually ejecting molecules that are physically deeper and relatively cooler than before.

JILA scientists say it appears feasible to cool OH molecules to even colder temperatures, perhaps to a point where all the molecules behave alike, forming the equivalent of a giant "super molecule." This would enable scientists to finally learn some of the elusive basics of how molecules interact and develop novel ways to control chemical reactions, potentially benefitting atmospheric and combustion science, among other fields.

The research was funded by the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Air Force Office of Scientific Research and NIST.

Female Masculinity

Gender is an outward expression of what the society considers masculine or feminine. It is demonstrated by our modes of talk, dress, or manner styles that define the difference between the two. Its meaning varies from one society to another depending on the values, customs and beliefs held by the particular society. This paper examines the role played by the society through its basic institutions to bring distinction between femininity and masculinity. More emphasis is laid on the impact of culture on femininity together with its effect on all aspects of growth and development.

The issue of masculinity brings out notions of power, privilege and legitimacy. It symbolizes the power of state and unequal distribution of property. It represents the inheritance and social privileges across gender and sexuality. Culture and society tend to ignore and discourage female masculinity and yet is highly attentive on male femininity. "Issues of gender inequality are perpetuated by the patriarchal nature of our society that permits male domination and female subordination" (Kambarami, 2006). This has largely been influenced throughout the process of socialization.

Researchers, community organizers and law enforcers who concern themselves with anti-LGB (-lesbian, -gay and -bisexual) prejudice and discrimination tend to conflate those aspects that target sexual orientation with other issues of gender non nonconformity (Gordon, 2007). Gender nonconformity is defined as "An outward appearance or gender expression that does not conform to the traditional laws of gender" (Gordon, 2007).

It is attributed with experiences of sexual minority and behaviors that deviate from the expected gender roles. The gender nonconformity incidences were discovered to occur in the societal set up and were mostly perpetrated in the family, in schools, religious settings like a church and in the corporate world like in a public retail setting (Gordon, 2007). This gives evidence of the roles played by the society through its basic institutions on the issues of gender and sexuality.

There are various contexts in which the society shapes women to femininity. It sets boundaries for women that are morally acceptable according to cultural norms and customs. There is the interplay between femininity, sexuality and culture (Kambarami, 2006). Culture impacts feminine sexuality negatively by imprisoning women to subordination of patriarchy which consequently renders them powerless to control their sexuality. Feminists define patriarchy as "A social system in which men tend to over rule all the social responsibilities as women remain in subordination" (Kambarami, 2006).

An example of a social setting where feminism is highly displayed and culturally manipulated is in the family. The socialization process differentiates the boy and girl child at a very tender age. The boys are oriented to view themselves as the family heads and breadwinners whereas the girls are trained to be obedient and submissive housekeepers (Kambarami, 2006). This consequently displays women as sexual beings and not human beings, where they are being defined in relation to men therefore, dependent to them always. The society instills in women qualities such as gentleness, passivity and submission in order to please men (Kambarami, 2006).

In our culture for example when a girl attains the puberty age, she receives endless teachings on how to please and maintain her future husband by being a submissive wife. She is further exposed to issues of her sexuality and how best to utilize it for male's benefit. The teachings encourage dependency where a woman ultimately cannot support themselves in absence of the husband. They observe a male figure with great awe for provision and cannot survive alone in the case of the husband's death but have to remarry.

The society values the male child more than the female. The foundation of this is in the family where a boy child rules a girl child by the right of birth. He may not be the first born in the family but he is bestowed headship in the household. Prejudice rises against the girl child because it is expected that she eventually marries out and becomes apart of another family (Kambarami, 2006). An idealistic example in the socialization process is exhibited where parents purchase toys for their children. "A girl is given dolls and kitchen utensils to play with whereas the boy is given cars, puzzle games and the toys which refine their physical energy and cognitive abilities" (Kambarami, 2006).

The girl child at puberty is also regularly warned against interacting and 'joking' with boys. This makes the girls treat their counterparts with fearful respect and anxiety. Though it indirectly or indeliberatly happens, the girl child is oriented to the weakly attributes of being soft and emotional which translates to femininity. It further perplexes her as she matures since the biological bells are beckoning her to indulge in mutual relationships, but rather she feels guilty due to the socially sowed attitudes and norms. She fears consulting and secretly gets into the wrong relationships. Thereafter she conceives mistakably and forces abortion, much more the society does not spare her, as she is rendered immoral.

The society expresses leniency on male sexual behavior but it is greatly strict when addressing sexual conduct in females. The males are given freedom to experiment sexually before marriage whereas the females are expected to preserve their virginity as way of making the marriage pure. After marriage, a husband can have extra-marital affairs where sarcastically the blame is put on the wife for failing to satisfy him. When the wives complain, the older women advise them to put up with the infidelity as the society is already used to it. However, it is not permissive in the same society for the wife to have extra marital affairs as she is labeled as 'loose' and is sent back to the parents for some discipline (Kambarami, 2000).

It is expected that women are supposed to be sexually passive and submissive to men's desires. A woman is not to initiate sex but should wait a man to express desire and set the conditions for the encounter. There are various mystical beliefs in the society on female sexuality which portrays it as very distinct from men's. It is supposed that men have higher sex drives and are easily aroused which they find hard to control. It also believed that men extract the highest enjoyment in sex therefore are more sexually possessive and are permitted to engage extramarital sex. Such beliefs portray women as colder and more virtuous as long as sex is concerned. They are rendered to possess less sexual desires than their male counterparts, that they do not extract pleasure from sex therefore should have less of it.

. All these are nothing but illusions that pervade our culture.

The biggest difference between male and female sexuality today is a consequence of power and motivation, where men initiate as women submit. This is also evident in our language and choice of words in sex conversations. Many people use heavy terms like 'men screw' and women on the other hand get 'screwed'. The active verbal forms are attributed with men. This distinction between the assertive males and the passive females suggests that there is no sexual inhibition as long as men are concerned. Men seek sexual encounters which make them further obsessed and have to do it regardless of whether it implies crossing the cultural boundaries. Similarly, according to the image of female sexual passivity, "femininity infers resistance to sexuality" (Jackson, 2005). In reality women experience sexual pleasure equally as men and are aroused similarly as often. However, women's desire is often curtailed to passivity as initiated by the societal norms and beliefs.

Further in the realm of sexuality, gender inequality also affects the issue of giving and receiving pleasure. Recall that women are supposed to be submissive and depend on man for provision including sex. It is therefore evident men perceive women as sexual bodies which does not retaliate in women's perception about men. Basing our argument still on femininity we find out that men fantasize more in doing and women in receiving. This deeply infers that women utilize love and sexuality as resources to exercise control over their femininity. They tap opportunity by "conceiving men as instruments to release their female potential in sexuality" (Jackson, 2005). It enables women counteract their passivity and subordination ideals through manipulating intimacy to men.

Women practice sexual resistance which makes them control their sexuality and achieve the goal of countering male's social power (Jackson, 2005). One of the weapons women use to defend themselves in sexual resistance is virtue. They do not want to appear 'loose' before men as the society dictates. This is through culture and experience where the loss of a woman's virtues is measured according to her permissiveness in sex. The risk of pregnancy too motivates women to deny sex. The fears of conception before marriage are mostly related to social influences which is counter to cultural norms.

Arsenal fixture likely to be cancelled amid London Tube strike

Arsenal's Boxing Day clash against West Ham looks likely to be called off due to the threat of a Tube strike.

The Press Association has reported that the match between the London rivals is almost certain to be re-scheduled with an official statement to be made later today.

London Underground drivers are planning to stage three strikes in a row over Bank Holiday pay - with the first scheduled for December 26.

The match is likely to now take place either on January 23 or 26.

There are two other Premier League matches taking place in the capital on Boxing Day - Fulham play Southampton and QPR host West Brom.

However those two games do not appear under threat with QPR stating their match is "definitely going ahead" and Fulham saying they have no plans to cancel theirs.

Other matches in London on Boxing Day include Charlton, Leyton Orient, AFC Wimbledon and Dagenham and Redbridge. They all expect to see their matches go ahead despite the industrial action.
