Gunman killed, hostages wounded as police storm Louisiana bank

By Kathy Finn

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - A police SWAT team stormed a rural Louisiana bank early on Wednesday, killing a gunman after he shot and critically injured two hostages, in a dramatic end to a 12-hour standoff.

State Police spokesman Albert Paxton said officers entered the bank building in the small town of St. Joseph shortly after midnight because the gunman was threatening to kill one or both of the hostages he was holding.

The man, identified as 20-year-old Fuaed Abdo Ahmed, the California-born son of Yemeni parents, shot both hostages when police entered the building. Police then shot and killed him, Paxton said.

"He was angry and he wanted to kill hostages," Paxton said of the gunman, who initially took three bank employees hostage but released one woman after several hours.

Paxton said Ahmed was mentally ill and had complained of hearing voices. The gunman's family owned a convenience store in the town, officials said.

The wounded hostages, previously identified as one woman and one man, were taken to local hospitals. Their names were not released.

The drama took place at the Tensas State Bank in St. Joseph in northeastern Louisiana, a town of less than 1,200 people.

Police said Ahmed had intended to take hostages from the beginning. They found books on hostage negotiation in his home.

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Scientists would love to know which forces created our universe some 14?billion years ago. How could ? due to a breaking of symmetry ? matter, and thus stars and galaxies, be created from an originally symmetrical universe in which the same conditions prevailed everywhere shortly after the Big Bang. Now, the Big Bang is an experiment that cannot be repeated. But the principle of symmetry and its disturbance can definitely be investigated under controlled laboratory conditions.

OFA Delivers Unicorn Trophies To GOP 'Climate Deniers'

Following President Barack Obama's pledge to bring his climate change plan to fruition, Organizing for Action volunteers on Tuesday delivered congressional naysayers their very own "Climate Denier Awards": unicorn trophies.

The awards feature mounted unicorns with engraved messages "honoring" recipients for "exceptional extremism and ignoring the overwhelming judgment of science." OFA zeroed in on a contingent of conservative lawmakers dismissing climate change and global warming, including Reps. Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.), Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.), Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), Andy Harris (R-Md.) and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.). According to an email distributed by OFA, a total of 135 members of Congress can expect to receive a trophy at their offices today.

"These awards are as real as the scientific evidence saying climate change is happening," said social director Caleb Gardner in an announcement on OFA's website. "The volunteers who are delivering them are hoping they will serve as a physical reminder that their constituents will hold these lawmakers accountable to their votes on climate issues."

OFA, which manages the president's Twitter account, took to social media early this week to begin gearing up for Tuesday's "award" delivery.

Subsequent tweets and materials delivered to "climate change deniers" assert that "NASA + 97% of scientists accept the science of climate change." Despite the statistic, 55 percent of congressional Republicans -- including House Science Subcommittee on Environment chair Rep. Chris Stewart (R-Utah) -- reject climate change as a legitimate threat.

Union declares coal dispute

Coal

Independent Newspapers

Johannesburg - Coal sector wage talks stalled on Monday when Solidarity declared a dispute with the Chamber of Mines, the trade union said.

?The dispute will be referred to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration for facilitation and the first dispute meeting will take place shortly,? general secretary Gideon du Plessis said in a statement.

He said the chamber presented a revised offer of a seven percent wage increase, with a seven percent housing allowance increase.

The chamber could not immediately be reached for comment.

Du Plessis said Solidarity had asked that the housing allowances for all workers in the sector be brought into line with the allowance offered by Anglo American Thermal Coal, which offered the highest.

?The dispute regarding the inequalities in the housing allowance has already been dragging on for eight years and must be resolved during this round of negotiations.

?Solidarity indicated that a revised offer that is in line with workers' inflation burden must be made and that an additional increase must be offered as compensation for the housing inequalities.? - Sapa
