Woman sues Equifax: Are credit report mistakes worth $18 million?

Woman sues Equifax: After spending two years trying to get Equifax to fix mistakes on her credit report, an Oregon woman sued. On Monday, a jury awarded her $18.6 million.

By Associated Press / July 29, 2013

A federal jury in Oregon awarded $18.6 million to a woman who spent two years unsuccessfully trying to get?Equifax?Information Services to fix major mistakes on her credit report.

Julie Miller of Marion County was awarded $18.4 million in punitive damages and $180,000 in compensatory damages, though Friday's award against one of the nation's major credit bureaus is likely to be appealed, The Oregonian reported.

The jury was told she contacted?Equifax?eight times between 2009 and 2011 in an effort to correct inaccuracies, including erroneous accounts and collection attempts, as well as a wrong Social Security number and birthday. Her lawsuit alleged the Atlanta-based company failed to correct the mistakes.

"There was damage to her reputation, a breach of her privacy, and the lost opportunity to seek credit," said Justin Baxter, a Portland attorney who worked on the case with his father and law partner, Michael Baxter. "She has a brother who is disabled and who can't get credit on his own, and she wasn't able to help him."

Tim Klein, an?Equifax?spokesman, declined to comment on specifics of the case, saying he didn't have any details about the decision from the Oregon Federal District Court.

Miller discovered the problem when she was denied credit by a bank in early December 2009. She alerted Equifax?and filled out multiple forms faxed by the credit agency seeking updated information. She had found similar mistakes in her reports with other credit bureaus, Baxter said, but those companies corrected their errors.

A Federal Trade Commission study earlier this year of 1,001 consumers who reviewed 2,968 of their credit reports found 21 percent contained errors. The survey found that 5 percent of the errors represented issues that would lead consumers to be denied credit.

Troops to the Track: Indiana National Guard Soldiers get VIP treatment

INDIANAPOLIS - Six Indiana National Guard soldiers with the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team's Company C, 1st Battalion, 151st Infantry Regiment got VIP treatment at Sunday's Brickyard 400 courtesy of the Armed Forces Foundation and NASCAR.

The soldiers toured the Indianapolis Motor Speedway garages, met driver Joey Logano, attended the drivers' meeting, walked pit lane and watched the race from the NASCAR suite.

One soldier, Staff Sgt. Joshua Kempf, Noblesville, Ind., waved the green flag to start the 20th running of the Brickyard, won by pole-sitter and Hoosier Ryan Newman.

"I don't think words can explain that," said Kempf after waving the green flag from the starter's stand high above the famed 2.5-mile oval. "It was awesome. That viewpoint was a once-in-a-lifetime experience."

Kempf, an infantryman with Company C, is a dedicated race fan watching everything from midget cars to IndyCars.

"I've been watching racing my whole life, probably since before I was walking," said Kempf.

While the citizen in Kempf enjoyed the experience as a fan, the soldier in him held the experience in high regard.

"It's a real honor to be able to do something like this," said Kempf of being able to start the race and the festivities leading up to it. "It's been a wonderful experience."

Capt. Jeremy D. Troutman, the Company C commander, chose Kempf for his dedication and leadership skills.

"Staff Sgt. Kempf is loyal to Charlie Company, and not only him but his whole family is heavily involved in the family readiness group program. So we thought we'd give him that honor," said Troutman, who was also Kempf's platoon leader during the 76th's deployment to Iraq in 2008.

Troutman said that Kempf was put in a lead position in overseas convoys.

"He got that position because he was trusted and the thorough way he conducted missions and training," said Troutman.

Kempf had the highest find to detonation ratio, 10 to 2, of roadside bombs in their battalion while in Iraq.

Other Company C soldiers also praised Kempf, who also deployed to Iraq in 2003.

"He's put so much into the unit with his knowledge. There's not a Joe there who doesn't look up to him. He's a book of knowledge," said Staff Sgt. Justin Law, who works with Kempf at Company C and was also a part of the Armed Forces Foundation's Troops to the Track program.

And though Kempf has attended many races and many at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, for another soldier, Sgt. Nhat Nguyen, this was his first.

"To be a part of the Troops to the Track event, I'm afraid from now on everything else will pale in comparison. They just set the expectations so high," said Nguyen. "I wish everybody who puts on the uniform can do something like this."

This year, Troops to the Track will be a part of 26 of NASCAR's 36 races.

Osbourne: Bieber 'doesn't realize he's white'

Celebs

Sharon Osbourne doesn't mince words when it comes to giving her opinion of other famous people.

Sharon Osbourne isn't afraid to give her honest opinion on anything -- or anyone. In a blunt interview with The Daily Beast, the TV personality and wife of rocker Ozzy Osbourne offered up her take on various musicians, including Justin Bieber.

"I feel really bad for him," Osbourne said of the teen pop sensation. "There?s this little kid with a huge dream, he?s cute, girls love him, and he wants to be a mean boy, and he?s about as mean as a (expletive) kitten, and he?s trying to act out."

Osbourne referred to Bieber infamously urinating in a mop bucket in a nightclub kitchen earlier this year while his friends laughed and filmed the event.

"It?s like, 'Oh, we?re the bad boys!' she said. "(Expletive) off! You don?t know what bad is. And I think that he?s lost, I really do. I think he doesn?t realize he?s white and not black, that?s a huge problem. And, at the point he?s at in his career, it?s so dangerous because we?ve seen it all before a million times. Where do you go when you?re a child entertainer and then you want to transition to be a man? Very few make it."

Osbourne also gave the interviewer her opinion on various other famous faces.

"I have no time for (Kanye West)," she said of the musician and Kim Kardashian baby daddy. "He bores me." But she had only praise for singers Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake.

Osbourne also had kudos for Angelina Jolie's decision to have a preventive double mastectomy upon learning she carried a gene making her highly likely to develop breast cancer. Osbourne herself had that same operation in 2012 upon learning she also had the gene.

"But my situation is nowhere near what Angelina?s was," she said. "She had lost her mother and her aunt to it, and she has all those babies to take care of. I?ve had my life, and she hasn?t yet."

Osbourne had nothing good to say about New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, whose second sexting scandal has made headlines lately.

"You?re a grown man with a great education, and you think, in this day and age, you can send pictures of your penis over the Internet and not get caught? " Osbourne said. "Now, how (expletive) stupid are you? What makes him think that he has a sense of freedom to do that?"

Japan's top diplomat heads for China seeking better ties

TOKYO | Mon Jul 29, 2013 1:09pm IST

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki will visit China on Monday and Tuesday for talks with senior officials, the latest in a series of efforts by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to improve relations soured by a bitter territorial row.

The hawkish Abe, who cemented his grip on power in an upper house election last week, has since then been signalling a desire for dialogue - even though Japan has raised its assessment of the risk of China's military buildup and maritime assertiveness.

On Friday, Abe called for an unconditional meeting between Japanese and Chinese leaders - a proposal he repeated on Monday, according to Kyodo news agency. It said Abe had instructed diplomats to work towards that goal.

On Sunday, Isao Iijima, an adviser to the premier, told reporters that Abe could soon hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said no schedule had been set.

"As Prime Minister Abe has repeatedly said, he wants a mutually beneficial, strategic relationship and the door is always open for dialogue.

"However, there is no immediate schedule for a leadership summit," Suga told a news conference on Monday.

Often fragile Sino-Japanese ties have been seriously strained since September, when a territorial row over tiny islands in the East China Sea flared following Japan's nationalisation of the uninhabited isles.

Concern that Abe, who came to power in December, wants to recast Japan's wartime history with a less apologetic tone has added to the tension.

"Vice Minister Saiki will visit China on July 29-30 and exchange views with Chinese officials," a Japanese foreign ministry spokesman said. He did not give further details.

China's Foreign Ministry responded to Abe's overture on Friday by saying its door was always open for talks but that the problem lay in Japan's attitude.

Japan should "stop using empty slogans about so-called dialogue to gloss over disagreements", the ministry said in a statement faxed to Reuters.

REPEAT SUCCESS?

Abe, 58, may be hoping to repeat one of the few successes of his troubled 2006-2007 term in office, when he thawed ties with China that had frayed during the five-year stint of his predecessor, Junichiro Koizumi. One opportunity for the Japanese leader to meet his Chinese counterpart could be a Sept 5-6 Group of 20 leaders' summit in St. Petersburg, Russia.

"It's not a breakthrough yet, but we are hopefully making some progress," said Kunihiko Miyake, a former diplomat close to Abe who is now research director at the Canon Institute for Global Studies in Tokyo. "It is not unilateral solicitation (by Japan). It is a mutual sort of approach without losing face. That's why it takes time."

Experts say the key sticking point to a Sino-Japanese summit is whether the two sides can find a way to set aside the row to calm the situation and focus on other aspects of relations between the world's second- and third-biggest economies.

China wants Japan to first acknowledge that a formal dispute exists, a step that Tokyo has rejected for fear it would undermine its claim to sovereignty of the isles, known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China, the experts said.

Tensions rose last year after Japan nationalised the islands and Chinese and Japanese ships and aircraft have been playing a cat-and-mouse game nearby, raising worries about an accidental clash that could escalate. On Monday, Japan's coast guard said four Chinese vessels were sighted in nearby waters, although not in an area Japan considers its territory.

The United States has affirmed that the islands are included in its commitment under a U.S.-Japan security treaty, but has repeatedly made clear it would like to see tensions abate.

Whether China's Xi, who faces huge challenges in dealing with corruption and slower-than-expected growth, has the bandwidth to improve ties with Tokyo is as yet unclear, especially given the negative view of Japan among many Chinese.

Beijing may also be waiting to see how Abe handles the touchy topic of wartime history, given the still bitter memories in China of Japan's past aggression.

Japan's Mainichi newspaper said last week Abe was unlikely to visit Yasukuni Shrine on August 15, the emotive anniversary of Japan's defeat in World War Two. The shrine is seen by critics as a symbol of Tokyo's past militarism because leaders convicted by an Allied tribunal as war criminals are honoured there along with war dead.

Trying to save part of Rosie the Riveter's factory

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) ? The Detroit-area factory where Rosie the Riveter showed that a woman could do a "man's work" by building World War II-era bombers, making her an enduring symbol of American female empowerment, will be demolished if money can't be found to save it.

The Willow Run Bomber Plant, a 332-acre former Ford Motor Co. factory west of Detroit that churned out nearly 9,000 B-24 Liberator bombers during World War II, is slated to be torn down unless a group can raise $3.5 million by Thursday to convert at least some of the structure into a new, expanded home for the nearby Yankee Air Museum.

"The younger generation needs to know what people went through and be able to go and see what they did and how they did it for our country," Larry Doe, a 70-year-old Ypsilanti Township resident who has given to the cause, said recently before joining other donors for a trip on a B-17.

Although women performed what had been male-dominated roles in plants all over the country during the war, it was a Willow Run worker ? one of an untold number of women in its 40,000-person workforce ? who caught the eye of Hollywood producers casting a "riveter" for a government film about the war effort at home.

Rose Will Monroe, a Kentucky native who moved to Michigan during the war, starred as herself in the film and became one of the best-known figures of that era. She represented the thousands of Rosies who took factory jobs making munitions, weaponry and other things while the nation's men were off fighting in Europe and the Pacific.

Although many Rosies were let go once the war was over and the soldiers returned home, they had shown that women were capable of doing jobs that had traditionally been done by only men. An illustrated poster of a determined-looking Rosie the Riveter rolling up her sleeve with the slogan, "We can do it!," became an iconic symbol of female empowerment for American women.

The Willow Run factory went back to making automobiles after the war ended, and it did so for more than a half-century under the General Motors name before closing for good in 2010.

Now, Doe and other donors are hoping to save at least some of the massive structure to convert it into the new home of the Yankee Air Museum. The museum's original headquarters burned down in 2004, and it is currently housed at Willow Run Airport in Van Buren Township, which is near Ypsilanti Township, where the plant is located.

"We now have the opportunity to actually take a piece of this plant. It's due to be demolished over the next two or three years," said Dennis Norton, president of the Michigan Aerospace Foundation. "There's no further use for it. It's too big. It's too old to be used in modern-day manufacturing."

Organizers of the "Save the Willow Run Bomber Plant" campaign say they need $8 million to fund their "separation" plan. They want to acquire part of the 5 million-square-foot plant, secure it and re-establish utility services such as water, gas and electric.

They have raised $4.5 million of what they need and are hoping to entice major donors to come forward with six- and seven-figure commitments.

Detroit's historic bankruptcy filing two weeks ago isn't expected to have any effect on fundraising, said Dan Pierce, a spokesman for the effort.

"We have not heard this from any prospective donors and don't think we will," he said.

Yankee Air Museum backers are hoping to tap into some of that patented Rosie resolve in their efforts to transform Willow Run.

The hulking facility currently is in the hands of the Revitalizing Auto Communities Environmental Response Trust, which took over sites around the country left behind in the bankruptcy of GM.

Much of the plant has fallen into disrepair, including the portion the Yankee Air Museum is eyeing. The factory floor is littered with debris that sits among rusted-out and busted-up equipment once used to make transmissions.

Norton and his colleagues hope to change that soon.

The millions left to raise represents "a significant amount of money," he said.

"However, if we didn't think we could do it, we wouldn't have started it in the first place."

Priest accuses Scottish Catholic church of cover-up in latest sex scandal

Another priest has revealed details of sexual misconduct in the Catholic Church, claiming he?s being punished for coming forward.

A priest who is being called Father Michael, as he wishes to remain anonymous, claims he is being kicked out of the church for reporting Father Paul Moore to the police in 1997 for sexual assault.

The church has no comment ?due to the complex legal situation, criminal, civil and canonical?.

?I woke to find Moore fondling me under the bedclothes,? said Father Michael.

?I placed a chair behind the door and would sometimes hear it rattling,? he added.

Father Michael said he sought help on two separate occasions from Cardinal Kieth O?Brien, Britain?s former most senior Roman Catholic cleric who resigned in March over sexual misconduct.

In 1996 and in 2013 when Father Michael went to O?Brien, the former cardinal expressed ?shock? but did not offer any help.

Father Michael also went to O?Brien?s temporary replacement, Archbishop Philip Tartaglia who reportedly wrote ?I think it is better for me to return these documents to you? when Father Michael appealed for his help in 2013.

According to British newspaper The Guardian, the church has told Father Michael that he will be removed unless he resigns.?

Father Michael has received a letter in which Bishop John Cunningham of Galloway informs him he must retire because of ?your ill-health, both physical and psychological, as you yourself have detailed to me in your letters and in those sent by your medical doctors and psychotherapist.

Father Michael, who is recovering from cancer, claims Bishop Cunningham denied requests to lessen his workload while in recovery.

Though Moore reportedley confessed to inappropriate behavior, Father Michael feels he's being treated unfairly because the church is still protecting Moore while asking Father Michael to resign.

Father Michael said: ?What I have had to face is something very evil. Had I known what I would experience when I was lying on the floor at ordination, I would have stood up and walked out. I focused my life on priesthood, thinking it was about goodness, kindness and everything I wanted to aspire to. I discovered it was nothing like that.?

?It's a tragic story,? he added.

?It's about cover-up, deceit and lies.?

The church is a big mafia, and they trash you. They will do everything to destroy me.?

Banksy mural from London to be auctioned next year

Banksy mural from London to be auctioned next yearA Banksy mural from a wall in London, estimated to be worth about million pounds, has been removed from the side of a shop and is set to go for auction in 2014.

The art has been removed from the side of a shop in Tottenham in North London yesterday. Many people from the area have said that the street art must be for the benefit for the community.

The Banksy mural has been taken down to be auctioned less than two months after the graffiti artist's Turnpike Lane art were auctioned in London. A sign with a boy and a girl throwing a sign which reads `no ball games' in the air was sprayed by the artist on the side of a shop on the corner of Philip Lane and Tottenham's High Road four years ago.

The move to remove the art has been criticized by the angry residents, who are about to lose another piece of art from their area.

Keith Flett, secretary of Haringey Trades Council said, "The Banksy was an important cultural feature of the area, and if it has been removed - which currently looks rather likely given the wall is being re-plastered - it will be another indication that local people's wishes in the area come second to the interests of profit."

Motive for Florida apartment shooting still unknown

This photo shows an undated family photo provided by Zulima Niebles of Patricio Simono, a victim of a fatal shooting at an apartment building in Hialeah, Fla., Saturday, July 27, 2013.

This photo released by the Hialeah Police Department shows Pedro Vargas. Vargas went on a shooting rampage throughout his apartment building, killing six people before being shot to death by police, Saturday July 27, 2013.

City of Hialeah rescue workers walk down a staircase at an apartment building after a fatal shooting at the complex in Hialeah, Fla. on Saturday, July 27, 2013.

MIAMI???Police Sunday said they still do not know what provoked a rampage by a 42-year-old Cuban-American who shot to death six of his neighbors before being killed by police.

Hialeah police chief Carl Zogby confirmed reports that the suspect, Pedro Vargas, had set fire to $10,000 in cash at the start of Friday night's rampage in an apartment building.

"But the reasons for this irrational situation are unknown," Zogby said, who said police were still trying to determine Vargas' motives.

Police believe the incident began when the building's manager, Italo Pisciotti, 79, and his wife Samira, 69, went to his apartment in response to the fire, local press reports said.

He then moved from floor to floor, gunning people down.

Vargas broke into a neighbor's apartment, shooting to death Patricio Simono, 65, Merly Nieves, 51, and their 17-year-old daughter who tried to hide in the bathtub.

At one point, Vargas opened fire from his balcony, killing 33-year-old Carlos Gavilanes as he arrived at his apartment building across the street with his nine-year-old son.

After lengthy negotiations failed to get him to surrender, a police SWAT team entered the building early Saturday morning and fatally shot Vargas, who was holding a couple hostage at the time.

Vargas, who lived with his mother, arrived in the United States in 1997 and became a citizen in 2004.

The weapon he used, which has not been identified, was legally purchased, and Vargas had a valid license, according to police. Continued...

SRC transfers bioterrorism researchers, assets to Syracuse University national security program

SYRACUSE, NY -- Defense contractor SRC Inc. is transferring its bioforensics assets and staff to the Forensic and National Security Sciences Institute (FNSSI) at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences.

Bioforensics involves examining traces of biological agents as part of investigations into bioterrorism acts or the inadvertent releases of toxins, and determining the origin of the substances.

SRC, according to its website, uses bioforensics "as a means of determining where someone or something has been."

SRC Inc. is based in Cicero. It was founded in 1957 at SU as the Syracuse University Research Corp. In 1975,amid Vietnam War protests, SU officials asked the company to stop military work. Instead, the not-for profit ended its affiliation with SU and reorganized as Syracuse Research Corp.

Under an agreement between SU and SRC, three SRC scientists will become SU employees, continuing their research in Lyman Hall and joining the 10 faculty already teaching at the FINSII.

The SRC/FNSSI team will be led by David Knaebel, whose expertise includes molecular biology and ecology. The institute will acquire nearly $1 million in biochemical research equipment, in addition to specialized research materials, inventions that include at least nine patents and other scientific expertise.

The agreement will also enable SRC and SU to jointly bid on contracts, said Rob Enslin, a spokesperson for the FINSII.

FNSSI Executive Director James T. Spencer says the transfer was prompted by SRC's decision to shift its focus to other areas.

"SRC has developed considerable expertise and capabilities in bioforensics research," said Spencer, who also serves as the college's associate dean for science, mathematics and research. "The timing of the transition couldn't be better, given the growing need for methodologies involving bioterrorism threats, chemical detection and analysis, and sample provenance and origin.

Spencer says that all of FINSII's work is non-classified. From SRC, the FNSSI will gain state-of-the-art DNA capabilities, as well as expertise in worldwide biological systems, including research tools that determine the geospatial origins of things such as heroin, cocaine and other plant-based materials.

Syracuse University's FNSSI was officially formed two years ago as a research and teaching center, though similar teaching and research involving forensic science had been taking place at Syracuse for the last six to eight years, said Spencer.

SU's FINSII is the nation's first program to comprehensively focus on scholarship in forensic and national security sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

McCain won't delay Dempsey's nomination as U.S. military chief

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senator John McCain said on Tuesday he would not delay Army General Martin Dempsey's nomination to a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff after Dempsey spelled out what he saw as possible U.S. military options for Syria.

McCain said he was disappointed with Dempsey's answers but would not hold up a Senate vote on his confirmation.

"The president I think has the right to choose the team around him, particularly as far as military advisers are concerned," McCain told reporters outside the Senate. "But this assessment that General Dempsey gave of how to address the challenges in Syria are beyond anything that any rational military thinker that I know would ever contemplate."

McCain, a former Republican presidential nominee who is one of the Senate's most influential voices on military issues, has been an outspoken proponent of military aid for the rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

McCain repeatedly questioned Dempsey's judgment on Syria during the hearing on his renomination on Thursday. He told reporters he would block the nomination until he had more answers from Dempsey on whether the United States should intervene in the conflict.

Dempsey said in a letter released on Monday that U.S. forces could undertake a range of missions to help Syrian rebels if asked by the White House, from training to establishing no-fly zones or conducting limited attacks on military targets.

However, he warned of the risks of unintended consequences and noted that involvement in Syria would be an act of war that could cost billions of dollars.

U.S. Share Of Mobile Ad Impressions Dips Below 50% On Worldwide Surge, Opera Finds

opera-media-works-logoOpera Mediaworks today released its State of Mobile Advertising Report for Q2 2013, and the news from the largest mobile ad platform is that mobile ad impressions are growing globally, with U.S. share dipping to below 50 percent, though American impressions still account for just under 75 percent of revenue, meaning its dropping share doesn't make it any less important for advertisers going after mobile users.

Chinese Christian ?Desperate? after Police Shut Down House Church

ICC Note: "I am lost and desperate now" said Zhu Zhinfeng, a 60-year-old Chinese Christian woman, in a recent interview with the South China Morning Post after her house church fellowship of more than ten years was shut down in Northwest China by police. So far her attempts to file for an "administrative review" of the charge of conducting illegal Christian activities has yet to be accepted by authorities. Many millions of Christians in China continue to worship outside of the governments highly controlled Three-Self Church and Catholic Patriotic Association. Unfortunately anyone who chooses to do so is technically involved in an illegal religious service and subject to prosecution. ?

7/21/2013 China (ChinaAid) - Xinjiang Christian Zhu Jinfeng, 60, says she attends "house churches" - religious services at home - instead of state-sanctioned ones because she prefers to talk to God without going through China's administration of religious affairs.

But Zhu?s habits of more than 10 years came to an abrupt end after local policemen stormed into her home in Urumqi last month during a bible study session she held with elderly neighbours. The group was dismissed on site. Zhu was briefly detained, charged with conducting ?illegal? Christian activity, and fined 200 yuan (HK$250).

Zhu, while still shaken by the raid, hasn?t given up her fight for her freedom to worship in her own home. She decided to appeal her case by filing an application for ?administrative reconsideration,? a legal action pursued by Chinese citizens when they feel their rights are infringed upon.

?Christianity is not a cult, and we are not criminals,? Zhu told South China Morning Post on Friday. ?We do pray for our country, too, in our gatherings.?

ChinaAid, a non-profit Christian organisation monitoring religious persecution in China and an activist lawyer in Beijing, offered to help Zhu draft the application letter. But when she tried to submit it, a local official told her to visit at another time when ?at least two people were present? - presumably to follow government protocol.

?I am lost and desperate now,? Zhu sobbed while revealing her frustrations in a phone interview with the Post . She has stopped worshipping God at home since, but still refuses to go to a state-sanctioned church - as suggested by law enforcement officers.

Bob Fu, founder and president of ChinaAid, said government harassment of Christians who go to "unauthorised" places to worship have been increasing in the last few years. Christians are also being given harsher punishments, he said.

Alex: Mayan Mysteries iPhone Game Review ? Great Fun

Tucker Cummings | On 22, Jul 2013

?

Alex: Mayan Mysteries is an iPhone game developed by?Sebastian Sejud. If you want a game that?s part platformer and part Tomb Raider, this immersive little title is probably right up your alley.

In this charming little game, you play as famous adventurer Alex. You travel to the ancient Mayan City of Tikal, searching for the lost golden masks of the kings. But it turns out that the pyramids are inhabited by many creepy creatures, making your adventure all the more perilous.

mzl.etojnkzr.320x480 75 300x168 Alex: Mayan Mysteries iPhone Game Review Great Funmzl.hkytrpry.320x480 75 300x168 Alex: Mayan Mysteries iPhone Game Review Great Fun

As you navigate these creepy ruins, you?ll need to collect golden masks in every level. Along the way, you?ll need to watch out for poisonous spiders and other enemies.

The controls here are very responsive, though they also feel a bit floaty at times. I think this is because of the smooth, long jumps you get with each tap of the ?up? button: these jumps seem to defy gravity a bit. Overall, however, the in-game physics are consistent.

For my taste, the graphics a little bit retro-looking, which is always a nice touch in my book. It seems odd to complain about a game set in a dark, dungeon-like tomb for being too dark, but I did occasionally feel like I would have liked to bump up the contrast a bit, if only to save my eyes some.

Mayan Mysteries boasts atmospheric music and charming, almost retro-style graphics. Because this game balances fun gameplay with solid controls and great ambience, Alex: Mayan Mysteries gets a Tapscape score of 8 out of 10. If you really enjoy a game that?s all about exploring creepy caverns and collecting artifacts, grab this game now.

Alex: Mayan Mysteries?is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 5.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

xRec Sneaks Into App Store, Records iPhone Screen Without Jailbreak

xrec 1

Have you ever wished you could record your iPhone?s screen activity? Short of a tool on the Mac like Reflector, it?s hard to capture video of iOS in action. Apple doesn?t allow apps in the App Store that can record video of anything on the screen? until now.

A new app called xRec has managed to slip into the App Store, and it can fully record the iPhone?s screen, including any audio.

The app costs $2, and the interface is actually quite nice. Tap the play icon to record video, and a red bar will be displayed in the iPhone?s status bar until the recording ends. Any audio from other apps can be recorded as well, and there?s even an option to adjust the quality of what you record.

xrec

Once a recording is complete, xRec can send the file via Messages, Mail, etc. and other apps like Dropbox. The developer notes that iOS 7 is not supported. After testing it, I can confirm that the app works as advertised, but video recording does indeed not work on iOS 7. It behaves similarly to Display Record, a popular jailbreak tweak that has been around for years.

The app popped on Saturday, and Apple has yet to take it down. (The Dev Center has been serving as a good distraction over the past few days.) It probably won?t be available for long, so grab it now from the App Store before it?s too late!

Microsoft?s Stance on Indie Games is a Problem

Xbox One

The Xbox One is set to release with the same guidelines for indie gaming that currently stand?on the Xbox 360. While that may have worked for last generation, it likely?won?t in?the future. The company?s position on indie games needs to change.

Thanks to all of the consumer backlash that followed the announcement of the Xbox One, for better or worse, Microsoft pulled a?180 on almost all of its new policies surrounding DRM, physical media and connectivity.

However, there?s one wall that?s yet to come down, and that?s the one surrounding Microsoft?s stance on indie games and the Xbox One.

If you make indie games and want to sell them on the Xbox One, as it stands now, things won?t be easy. You?ll need to be published by either a larger third party publisher, or by Microsoft Studios directly.?In other words, Microsoft won?t work with you in order to self publish your games. You?ll need a bigger backer from a list of approved publishers to get the ball rolling, and that stands in stark contrast with what can be done on the PlayStation 4, Wii U and, of course, the PC.

Then there?s what bigger independent developers have to say regarding Microsoft?s policy decisions with the Xbox One. Here?s Lorne Lanning, co-founder and current head of Oddworld Inhabitants, in an interview published by VG247 yesterday.

?At the business level, Microsoft isn?t acknowledging people like us?It?s as if we don?t matter.?

Lanning went even further to suggest that those responsible for these policies should get the collective boot.

?Whoever their PR people are, whoever their marketing agents are, they should fire them all. That?s where they should start. There should be a big, mass firing and they should publicise that. Then they?d get people saying, ?Hey, maybe there?s going to be a good change.??

The Failing AAA Model

Sure, big blockbuster games currently stand as the money makers for consoles. The massive projects that cost tons of money to produce, market and release are the current standard for console gaming.

That model, though, is changing.

Octodad

For most large?publishers, the decision to create a game hinges on risk. Risky properties and ideas might not succeed in the marketplace. Publishers don?t want to dump millions and millions into an?idea that has a strong chance of underperforming, so they go with the safe bet:?shooters and established IPs.

The bad news? The?AAA model is getting a bit too big for its britches. I covered this in a previous feature here on Crave, so I?ll point towards a little logic from that article to prove my point.

Publishers toss so much money at these games and their development that it becomes almost impossible to turn a profit. Not every game is Halo, Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto. Those titles sell based on their franchise history alone. They will easily clear five million copies at retail during their first few days and weeks.

Everything else dying to be AAA has been sent out to die. Look back at the recent Tomb Raider relaunch from Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix. This was an incredible, incredible game. We loved it here at Crave.

Well within its first month at retail, Square Enix announced that Tomb Raider had sold nearly 3.5 million copies. 3.5 MILLION. Guess what? It missed projections.

AAA gaming as we know it is fading away. The next wave will be all about in-house exclusives and independently built masterpieces.

Interest in Indie Games is Growing

The real clinching point? People want indie games. They want to love the unique ideas, interesting mechanics and completely foreign methods of play. In a market that?s become oversaturated with shooters, racers and generic adventures, indie games serve as a change of pace.

Look at the games Sony brought on stage during its?E3 presentation just over a month ago. The company announced PlayStation 4 versions of crazy titles like Octodad: Dadliest Catch, Ray?s The Dead, Secret Ponchos, Outlast, Don?t Starve and Mercenary Kings.

These are all wild and unique games that people genuinely want to play. They glow with?passion and inspiration. They are the wave of things to come.

What ?indie? game did Microsoft show off for the Xbox One? You might have heard of it before?

Minecraft Xbox One

China ends controls on lending rates

BEIJING -- China said Friday it is ending controls on bank lending rates in a move toward creating a market-oriented financial system to support economic growth.

Reform advocates see an overhaul of China's interest rate policy as one of the most important changes required to keep its growth strong. Banks currently lend mostly to state industry rather than the entrepreneurs who create China's new jobs and wealth. Allowing banks to negotiate their own rates with borrowers could channel more credit to private enterprise.

"This is a significant development for China's financial sector in the direction of having interest rates determined by market forces rather than government fiat," said Mark Williams of Capital Economics in a report.

The scrapping of controls on lending rates is the first major economic reform under the government of President Xi Jinping, who took office earlier this year and faces a slowdown in China's torrid growth. Xi and other leaders have promised an array of changes but until Friday no details had been released.

"This reform is to further develop the basic role of market allocation of resources -- an important measure to promote financial support for the development of the real economy," said a central bank statement. The change takes effect Saturday.

The end of controls could allow banks to charge lower rates to more credit-worthy borrowers, lowering costs for healthy businesses and spurring growth. Until now, the lower limit on lending rates was set at 0.7 times the state-set benchmark interest rate.

Private sector borrowers also might be able to get more access to credit by paying more. That could help to reduce their reliance on a vast, unregulated underground credit market.

Regulators allowed that market to flourish over the past decade to support entrepreneurs. But they have tightened controls over the past four years since discovering state banks were putting money into such unsupervised lending and taking on unreported risks.

Friday's move could foreshadow another significant change in the world's No. 2 economy -- raising low rates paid to savers. There was no word on when that might happen.

Beijing has long used its banks to subsidize state industry with low-interest loans. Savers who had few alternative places to put their money were paid low rates on deposits that in recent years failed to keep up with inflation, meaning Chinese families lost money by leaving it in the bank.

That has suppressed household spending, which is among the lowest in the world as a percentage of the economy, and held back efforts to shift the basis of China's growth from exports and investment to more self-sustaining domestic consumption.

Chinese families looking for a better return on their savings have shifted money into more speculative investments in stocks and real estate, helping to fuel a boom in prices of both. They also have shifted money into "wealth management products," bundles of credit card and other debt that pay higher returns but that analysts worry might be too risky for household investors.

Cops: 4 men found held in 'deplorable' Texas home

HOUSTON (AP) ? Houston police say four men found living in a dungeon-like garage told investigators they were held against their will after being lured with the promise of cigarettes and alcohol.

Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva described the men as malnourished and possibly homeless. She says the garage had no bathroom and no beds, only a chair.

The men allegedly told investigators they were forced to live in the garage so their captor could cash their disability and public assistance checks.

Silva says one person has been detained but not charged.

Neighbors say they sometimes saw the men outside and waving as they drove past.

Investigators were still trying to determine how long the men lived in the garage, but Silva said it was at least weeks.

Machinima is planning a Netflix-style subscription network for gamers

Gamers are a rabid bunch, consuming as much game-related media and merchandising as they can, and developing tightly knit communities because of it. But is this niche audience big enough to sustain a subscription-based, on-demand content network?

Machinima, a gaming content company that also happens to be the seventh-largest YouTube channel, is trying to raise $80 million to find out, according to a report by Reuters.

The company, which was founded in 2001, has 8 million subscribers on YouTube. Its rich fanbase is mostly males ages 18-34, and they spend a lot of time with the channel. According to the company, they watch more than 2 billion videos?and spend more than an hour viewing on average every month.

In order to keep up with the user base, Machinima now works with more than 7,500 content producers worldwide (many of them gaming fans looking to make some extra money off of their video walkthroughs and play sessions). They produce a mix of gameplay videos and original content ? which is what?Reuters?says will be the basis of the Netflix-like network.

But Machinima is still unprofitable and, according to some recent?reports?(here and here),?is at a crossroads: It either needs more capital to help finance a new business strategy, or, it needs an exit of some kind. The $80 million (on top of the?$35 million it raised from Google and others last year) would presumably give the company more breathing room to prove that it can actually turn a profit by creating an on-demand content app.

Machinima CEO Allen DeBevoise told Reuters that the company ?plans on creating traditional, commercial-free, 44-minute episodes that cater to the game-loving audience. According to the report, the company is in talks with two Hollywood studios to produce content for the network, or possibly become investors.

Gamers are definitely willing to part with their money for quality content. Comedian and prominent Internet personality Toby ?Tobuscus? Turner, who has 4 million subscribers on his own channel, recently raised nearly $650,000 on Indiegogo to make his own game. Meanwhile, livestream gaming site Twitch.tv has 24 million users per month, often for shows lasting hours at a time. It has become the go-to platform for gamers and developers to raise money either through Paypal donations or advertising.

The reason that gaming media has become popular on the Internet is can be boiled down to the fact that gamers love watching games, and want to hear smart opinions about them. That?s what drives the popularity of big outfits like Machinima, smaller places like Rev3 and even individuals on Turner. Whether it?s Let?s Play videos, tournament coverage, or live from the convention floors, content about gaming does its best when its authentic and immersive.

If Machinima expects to tap into their loyal fanbase?s wallets, then those core concepts shouldn?t be abandoned in favor of flashy show gimmicks or reality TV pandering ? that?s ?how G4 was killed last year.

Israel And Palestinians Agree On Peace Talks

Israel and the Palestinians have agreed to return to direct peace talks that have been suspended since 2010.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry made the announcement in the Jordanian capital, Amman, on July 19 during last-minute shuttle diplomacy between the two sides.

Kerry hailed the agreement as historic.

Kerry said the United States had received commitment form both sides to enter direct talks over final-status issues in order to bring an end to their decades-old conflict.

According to Kerry, Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat and Israeli Justice Minister Tzipi Livni are set to open talks next week in Washington.

He praised Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for making "courageous choices" to return to the negotiation table.
