The factor that could determine future breast cancer treatment

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Australian scientists have shown how a 'transcription factor' causes breast cancer to develop an aggressive subtype that lacks sensitivity to estrogen and does not respond to anti-estrogen therapies such as Tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors.

Transcription factors are molecules that switch genes on or off. In this case, the transcription factor known as 'ELF5' inhibits sensitivity to estrogen very early in the life of a breast cancer cell.

In 2008, Associate Professor Chris Ormandy from Sydney's Garvan Institute of Medical Research showed that ELF5 was responsible for the development of the estrogen-receptor-negative cells in the breast during pregnancy that produce milk.

In the current study Ormandy, in collaboration with Drs Maria Kalyga and David Gallego-Ortega, has shown that the same molecular decision occurs in breast cancer and that ELF5 has the ability to change an existing tumour to an estrogen-insensitive type.

The team has also described the genetic mechanisms by which ELF5 opposes the action of estrogen, and has shown that it is possible to alter the subtype of breast cancer by manipulating ELF5 levels. The findings are published in the online journal PLoS Biology.

"This work tells us that cancers which become refractory to anti-estrogen treatment often do so by elevating their levels of ELF5 and becoming functionally estrogen receptor negative," said Ormandy.

"This raises the therapeutic option of manipulating ELF5 levels to treat breast cancer."

"As ELF5 is intracellular, this could possibly be done with small molecule therapies that target protein-to-protein interactions, or with small inhibitory RNAs."

"There is also the possibility of testing ELF5 levels in tumours to predict response to treatment and therefore guide treatment decisions."

"Our key discovery here is that by simply manipulating one transcription factor we can change the subtype of breast cancer."

Former reindeer farmer? 10 facts about 10 new members of Congress

Which new member of the House is a former reindeer farmer? Who is the biggest new Tea Party name in the Senate? Here?s a look at 10 new members of Congress with unique backgrounds.

The 113th Congress is sworn in on January 3, 2013, and it?s a diverse bunch.

There will be 90 new members of Congress to start the New Year, with 13 new senators and 67 representatives making their appearances in Washington.

The biggest names are in the Senate, with a superstar of the left and of the right getting top billing.

Elizabeth Warren defeated Scott Brown in Massachusetts in one of the most publicized races in 2012. Warren is seen as a new leader of the left, but the former Harvard Law professor was a Republican until 1995.

Ted Cruz is already being talked about as a 2016 presidential contender, even before he sets foot on the Senate floor. The Republican from Texas has Tea Party roots. He has also argued nine cases in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Tammy Baldwin is another high-profile name from the 2012 election making her Senate debut. Baldwin served 14 years in the House and is the first openly gay candidate elected to the Senate.

Maine?s new senator, Angus King, isn?t a Democrat or a Republican. King is a former governor who ran as an independent candidate in 2012.Since the 1980s, King has been involved with alternative energy products.

And Deb Fischer, the new senator for Nebraska, has a hands-on business background. She?s been in the ranching business since the 1970s, which could come in handy if votes need to be wrangled on the Senate floor.

The House has some interesting new members, including that professional reindeer farmer.

Kerry Bentivolio from Michigan is a newcomer to politics. Yes, he has reindeer and has worked as a Santa Claus portrayer, as well as a school teacher and engineer. He replaces Thaddeus McCotter in the House.

A better-known name is Joseph P. Kennedy III of Massachusetts. Just 32 years of age, Kennedy is the son of Joseph P. Kennedy II and the grandson of Robert Kennedy. He will represent Massachusetts?s 4th congressional district.

Florida?s Ted Yoho will represent the state?s 3rd district in Congress. Yoho?s career prior to politics was being a large-animal veterinarian and he used a grass-roots campaign to defeat incumbent Cliff Stearns in a primary.

And there will be two doctors in the House ? literally. Dr. Ami Bera will represent California?s 7th district. He is the former chief medical officer for Sacramento County. Raul Ruiz, also of California, has three graduate degrees from Harvard and has worked as an ER doctor in the past.

Students' online and offline social networks can predict course grades

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Ben-Gurion University of the Negev's (BGU) Social Networks Security Research Group in its Department of Information Systems Engineering has developed a novel method to predict how well or badly a student will perform in an academic course.

The information can be used to determine which students need the most help, as well as which ones excel and might be guided to further study or careers in that subject area. The paper, "Predicting Student Exam Scores by Analyzing Social Network Data," was presented earlier this month at the Advanced Media Technology Conference in Macau, Hong Kong.

According to co-author and Ph.D. student Michael Fire, "While most papers about social network analysis deal solely with information gathered online, this study draws some of the information from the real world -- social interactions which were conducted off the grid."

The researchers analyzed data from a BGU course that included assignments submitted online and Web site logs (containing 10,759 entries) to construct social networks of explicit and implicit cooperation among the students. The implicit connections are used to model all the social interactions that happened "offline" among the students: e-mails with questions, conversations in the lab while preparing the assignments and even course forums.

"These connections were very important, as we sought to model the social interactions within the student body," Fire explains.

In addition to analyzing the online submissions of the students who had to work in pairs or in groups, they also tracked login time and computer usage. For instance, if two students submitted their assignments from the same computer, it was a likely indication that the two had worked together to complete the assignment. If two students submitted assignments from different computers, but one right after the other on more than one occasion, the authors gave a value to that data, as well.

"One explanation for what we discovered is that your friends influence your grade in the course, so, if you pick your friends well, then you will get a higher grade," Fire says. "Alternatively, social networks in courses offer conditions whereby good students will pair with other good students, and similarly weaker ones will pair with weaker students."

Achieving success at a home-based business is not everyone?s fortune, but you should not let that stop you from trying it out. This is especially true today, when at an insignificant cost you can set up any of a variety of home-based businesses with a computer. It just takes a low cost, high-speed Internet access, and the enthusiasm to spend a bit of time doing the research. As opposed to a local brick-and-mortar business, which is expensive to set up, and is restricted to local customers, your computer business can be global. Everyone in the world having access to the Internet is a possible client.

Visit http://homebasedincome4you.com/what-can-i-sell-online/ to learn more.

There are many opportunities you might be keen on trying, if you are serious about giving a web based business a shot. It is very helpful if you know your way around a computer, but you definitely do not have to be a computer fundi for you to get started. It is usually being knowledgeable about a subject or activity, like a hobby, which is important for online success, and not so much your technical expertise. An individual who is a proficient writer could, for example, have an online business that does copywritng. Writing could also be done freelance, doing jobs for folks who either don?t like writing or aren?t any good at it. All you should do is find people who have a need, such as content, and supply it for them. Create some samples of your work and then do a bit of promoting, and you are going to be in business.

There are online auction web sites that are making a lot of money for many. You can buy items at wholesale value and sell them at retail price, or you may already have products suitable for selling on the web. Online auction web sites, such as eBay, do the hard work of bringing the buyers to your offers. What?s expected from you is to fix the price for your item, add it to the sales listings and wait for shoppers to purchase it. As soon as your item is sold, you get sent the cash and then you have the product shipped to the purchaser.

Life is becoming much easier in many ways through the advancements in technology. The computer has given ordinary people the ability to own their own business. Not only does the internet have lots of products to sell, but there is enough information on the internet to show you how to sell them. If you can identify a business model that you like and apply it to your own start-up business, that would be ideal.

You may only want to make some extra cash, rather than have a full time business, and the Internet is excellent for that. Hook your computer up to the Internet and you will be able to find huge amounts of information about starting a business on the internet. Get going on your research and you could soon begin making some money.

Anne Dilenschneider: The Innkeeper Is the Hero

Once, there was a little boy who was so excited one Sunday after practice for the church Christmas play that he practically jumped into the minivan when his mother came to pick him up. When he finally settled into the back seat, his mom called back to him, "So what part did you get that's making you so excited?"

The boy could hardly contain himself. "I got the part of the hero!"

"The hero?" she asked. "Are you Joseph?"

"Nooooo, Mom!" The look he shot her made it clear that he thought she was truly clueless.

"Are you the lead shepherd just like last year?"

"Nooooo, Mom!" She really didn't get it.

"Are you going to be a king and wear a crown this year?"

"No Mom! It's better than that!"

"The Angel Gabriel?"

"NO!"

"Tell me you're not baby Jesus!"

"Aw, Mom. I told you I'm the hero of the whole show."

"Well, who are you?"

"I'm the innkeeper!" the boy announced, grinning from ear to ear. "Without the innkeeper, there wouldn't have been any place for Jesus to be born!"

This is my favorite Christmas story because, until I heard it, I had never thought about the innkeeper. The innkeeper isn't part of most Nativity sets. I haven't heard any carols about the innkeeper. There don't seem to be any paintings that include him, either.

I can imagine the scene: Bethlehem is crowded with people coming home for the census. Rooms have been booked for months. It's late at night when the innkeeper opens the door and finds a young couple standing in front of him. The woman is nine months pregnant, and she and her husband look exhausted. They've walked 100 miles from Nazareth over rough and rocky terrain to get here.

The innkeeper is confronted with a dilemma.

As a child, he learned the story of Abraham and Sarah. He knows that couple welcomed the 3 strangers who showed up at their house by slaughtering the fatted calf and offering their guests a lavish feast. Then it turns out that the guests are angels sent to bring great news: As impossible as it seems, Sarah is going to have a baby. And so now there is a tradition of entertaining strangers, because often they are messengers to us from God.

The innkeeper also knows Moses' admonition in the Torah, reminding the people of Israel that they are called to love the stranger as themselves, because they remember what it was like to be strangers in Egypt.

He knows the tradition of having an empty chair at the table ready to welcome the one who comes as a stranger, as Elijah, at the great Pesach feast.

Now there are strangers on his doorstep. What to do?

I can imagine him pulling the door to a bit, and hastily consulting with his wife. Is there any space, anywhere? There are three people in each bed, and people sleeping on all the couches. There are air mattresses covering the living room and dining room and bedroom floors. What to do? They whisper back and forth, racking their brains, trying to come up with a solution.

Suddenly, he thinks of the stable out back. It's not much, but it's protected from the wind. The body heat of the animals makes it a warm place, no matter how cold it gets outside.

He flings open the door, and welcomes the couple with a broad smile. He explains he doesn't have much, but he has a possibility. A stable. Will it suffice?

It does.

And the innkeeper saves the day.

As it turns out, this is not the only inn and innkeeper in the Gospel of Luke.

The central story of that Gospel is a story we know as the story of the good Samaritan. In that story, Jesus tells us that a man is robbed on the road to Jericho. The good Samaritan comes along, bandages the man, and then brings him to ... an inn and an innkeeper.

The good Samaritan gets all the press for his efforts. Yet who is the one who cares for the wounded man day after day? Who changes the bandages and the sheets? Who feeds him every day? Who does this, not knowing whether he or she will actually be paid for this work or not? The innkeeper!

The innkeeper is the hero or shero of that story, too.

Then, at the end of Luke's Gospel, there is another story about an inn.

A couple is walking along the road to Emmaus. A stranger joins them. The three of them talk as they travel together. The couple shares their disappointment that Jesus is dead. It's very clear their hopes for the future are dashed.

The travelers come to an inn. The couple turns to enter the door. And, Luke tells us, "the stranger makes as if to go on."

There is a long, pregnant pause. The couple has to make a decision. Did they understand what Jesus had been teaching them during the three years they'd followed him? This is a test. The couple is standing on the doorstep. The stranger is beginning to walk away. They look at each other.

The silence is broken when the couple suddenly calls out, each one's words tripping over the other's. They invite the stranger to stay with them. They insist he join them, and share their reservation at the inn. The stranger turns toward them, and agrees. But first, they must have dinner. And as they are eating together, the couple discovers through the stranger, through their guest, that Christ is with them. It is a Christmas moment, all over again. Here is Emmanuel, God With Us!

* * *

This winter, in Fargo-Moorhead, there are over 500 homeless households. The overflow is so great that, for the second year in a row, a number of churches are housing the homeless people who do not have beds in the local shelters. It's literally a matter of life or death here. People can, and sometimes do, die on our streets in our subzero winter weather.

This year, once again, First United Methodist Church in Fargo volunteered to be one of the primary sheltering sites. That church was asked to take the unprecedented step of serving as a shelter for two or, possibly, three weeks. As soon as the dates were set, the members of First Church were quickly joined by the members of Edgewood United Methodist Church.

Because the Edgewood congregation worships in the First Church chapel, the room that serves as the primary guest bedroom at the church, the members of Edgewood decorated the chapel with lit Christmas trees and wreaths. They wanted the guests to have an experience of safety and beauty and delight as they rested in that room lit by Christmas lights each evening. At the same time, the First Church team came up with a floor plan that provided privacy for each guest, a priceless commodity for anyone homeless.

The guests were at First Church for two weeks. Many more than 80 volunteers from both congregations provided welcoming, registration, snacks, toiletries, overnight care, cleaning, and re-arranging.

It was a bit like having extra guests at home. There were beds everywhere, and extra places at the table. Many of the guests were young adults. One was a woman who was nine months pregnant. Most were working. One young man worked until 3 a.m. cleaning up the Fargo Dome after a big football game, and then had to walk the four miles to the church. A warm welcome, snacks and bed were waiting for him when he arrived.

Why did the people of First United Methodist Church and Edgewood United Methodist Church do this? Why did we open our hearts, and our minds, and our doors to complete strangers?

It's simple. Jesus made it very clear that he comes among us in many forms. As the person who is hungry or thirsty. As the person who needs a warm coat or gloves. As the sick person who needs comfort. As the person in jail who needs to be visited. As the stranger who needs welcoming and a place to stay.

Being innkeepers for our homeless guests this Advent has been good practice for living into our daily, all-year-long call to serve Jesus. It has allowed each one of us to grow in faith as we serve as Christ's hands, and feet, and open heart. As innkeepers, we have helped each other learn how to welcome Emmanuel, God With Us, right here in our home community.

(Reuters) - Starbucks Corp will use its ubiquitous coffee cups to tell U.S. lawmakers to come up with a deal to avoid going over the "fiscal cliff" of automatic tax hikes and government spending cuts.

Chief Executive Howard Schultz is urging workers in Starbucks' roughly 120 Washington-area shops to write "come together" on customers' cups on Thursday and Friday, as President Barack Obama and lawmakers return to work and attempt to revive fiscal cliff negotiations that collapsed before the Christmas holiday.

Whether members of Congress actually drink in the message is another matter. While the concentration of Starbucks cafes is high in the vicinity of the White House, it's relatively low near the U.S. Capitol. Members of the House and Senate enjoy private dining facilities and many of their offices have coffee machines.

Starbucks' cup campaign aims to send a message to sharply divided politicians and serve as a rallying cry for the public in the days leading up to the January 1 deadline to avert harsh across-the-board government spending reductions and tax increases that could send the United States back into recession.

"We're paying attention, we're greatly disappointed in what's going on and we deserve better," Schultz told Reuters in a telephone interview.

The CEO said he has joined a growing list of high-powered business leaders, politicians and financial experts in endorsing the Campaign to Fix the Debt, (www.fixthedebt.org) a well-funded non-partisan group that is leaning on lawmakers to put the United States' financial house in order.

Starbucks plans to amplify its "come together" message via new and old media, including Twitter and Facebook posts, coverage on AOL's local news websites and advertisements in The Washington Post and The New York Times.

"If (the talks) do not progress, we will make this much bigger," Schultz said of the messaging campaign, which he said is voluntary for cafe employees.

Given the number of Starbucks cafes in the Washington area and the number of workers on Capitol Hill, "I wouldn't be surprised if a cup of 'come together' finds its way into the White House and into the speaker's house," Schultz said in reference to Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner, who are at the center of the fiscal cliff talks.

'LACK OF LEADERSHIP'

"Our political system is not functioning in a way that is representative of what the country needs," he said. "This is the one time where politics should be put aside and what we're witness to is the exact opposite."

Schultz recently led the world's biggest coffee chain through a painful but successful restructuring that returned it to growth. He is no stranger to using Starbucks as a platform to advocate for an end to the political stalemate in Washington.

During the debt ceiling debate in August 2011, he made a splash by calling for a boycott of political contributions to U.S. lawmakers until they struck a fair and bipartisan deal on the country's debt, revenue and spending.

"We are facing such dysfunction, irresponsibility and lack of leadership" less than two years after the debt ceiling crisis, Schultz said.

Washington narrowly avoided a U.S. government default, but not before down-to-the-wire wrangling prompted the country's first-ever debt rating downgrade.

"There is something so wrong that we can be here again and not have the ability to put party aside for the betterment of the country," said Schultz. "We have the same language and rhetoric. Unfortunately we aren't learning much."

Rodney L. Taylor, Ph.D.: Winter Solstice: A Confucian View

Here in Colorado its that time of the year again: shorter days, longer nights. It may not be so obvious in its physical appearance in a world dominated by technology to address our every need and convenience -- after all, we are able to keep much of the darkness and cold at arm's length in the comfort of the world we have built. Yet the progression of Nature this time of year is steadily toward less and less light.

I am reminded of this progression by adjusting my solar panels on our mountain retreat to their near vertical position -- to capture as much of the diminishing light as possible with the now lower horizon line and fewer hours per day of sunlight. Writing from an off-grid setting miles up a dirt road at 9,000 feet in the Central Rockies of Colorado, I fill more hours of each day with "chopping wood and carrying water," as the Ch'an/Zen phrase would have it. And what a joy it is, kerosene lamps bringing light into steadily increasing hours of darkness each eve.

And then the nadir of light is reached -- that point at which light is closest to extinction and darkness pervades: Winter Solstice.

Religions worldwide, ancient and modern, have sought to address this point of greatest darknness be it by great bonfires burning through the longest night, decoration with greens or the burning of candles as reminders of the persistence of light, even "in the darkest hour."

Light will prevail, our traditions tell us, darkness will recede and even in the stony stillness of winter, life will flourish again. So we have the foundational metaphor of light and the particular meaning in this moment of the nadir of light, followed as it always is by its gradual increase.

The question before us is how Winter Solstice is viewed and interpreted in an even larger setting. Where world religions are often seen to incorporate the metaphor of darkness and light, little has been considered of a Confucian view of darkness and light or the nadir of light at Winter Solstice.

And, as the proverbial question would have it, what would Confucius say?

The answer, as one might expect, is that Confucius himself, like many religious founders, has little to say about a great variety of subjects. And Winter Solstice is certainly one of those! That does not exclude the topic from discussion in the later Confucian tradition, however, and one finds profound reflections upon the metaphors of light and dark as foundational to much of East Asian thought.

The most basic structure of such thought is found is the well-known symbol of Yin/Yang, a symbol ubiquitous to East Asian history and cultures. The Chinese characters contain the essential meaning of light and dark as ever changing phases of the coursing of all things, Nature and humanity alike. The totality of this changing and transforming universe is what generally is referred to as the Tao, the Way.

yin yangThe motion of yin/yang is a circular one -- more a spiraling one -- ever changing between one phase and the other. As yin fulfills itself, inherent within it are the seeds of yang, and visa versa. All changes occur within the goodness of the nature of Nature, for there is no evil in the cosmology, most certainly not in darkness any more than light.

The major source for the philosophy of yin/yang is the Chinese Classic the I-Ching, "Book of Changes." Within the "Book of Changes" much of the philosophical speculations concerning yin/yang is found in the commentary hsi-tz'u chuan, "Great Treatise." It was often to this source that Confucians -- Chinese, Koreans and Japanese -- turned to understand the cosmology of yin/yang theory.

So, how does yin/yang theory connect to Winter Solstice?

To answer this question I turn to the writings of Okada Takehiko, a contemporary Japanese Confucian; and one of his books I translated a number of years ago, "Zazen to Seiza" (Buddhist and Confucian Meditation) (See R. L. Taylor, The Confucian Way of Contemplation, 1988).

This teaching focuses upon the "storing of wisdom," chih-ts'ang, a phrase the Confucian philosopher Chu Hsi (1130-1200) found in the "Great Treatise" of the "Book of Changes." The source of this teaching for Chu Hsi begins with the fundamental Confucian teaching of the Four Beginnings, ssu-tuan, of the moral nature of each person -- goodness, righteousness, propriety and wisdom. Chu Hsi and a lineage of teachers direct to Okada himself extend such "beginnings" to the nature of the universe and interpret wisdom, chih, as the endpoint and fulfillment of such teachings.

And here is the connection to Winter Solstice. When those same Four Beginnings are placed in the context of the four seasons, wisdom, chih, corresponds to winter.

The metaphor is profound: Wisdom for these Confucians is the endpoint of the Four Beginnings and it is best understood within the context of winter.

In Okada's own words:

"Stored wisdom is boundless and empty, but in it there is included all existence. It is the totality of principle with no distinguishing characteristics, and within it there is a vigorous activity. Therefore it is the unity of existence and activity. In terms of the four seasons it is the moment of midnight of the winter solstice, and it corresponds to the point of time when quietude is completely exhausted and subtle function is about to begin moving." (Okada, Zazen to seiza in Taylor, Confucian Way of Contemplation, p.148)

There are many technical points of later Confucian metaphysics in this passage, but what should be very clear is the degree to which Winter Solstice holds meaning as a profound metaphor for the acquisition of wisdom within the Confucian tradition.

And so, as we come once again to that shortest day and deepest night, consider the ways in which humankind has sought to find meaning, profound meaning, in the cycling of light and dark, the yin and yang of cosmic process, with the Confucian recognition of wisdom as that which is more often than not seen as "through a glass, darkly" (1 Corinthians 13:12).

McLemore's 22 gives Kansas huge road win, 74-66

(AP) ? It's not supposed to be this easy for a kid playing his first collegiate road game.

Kansas' Ben McLemore, a redshirt freshman surrounded in the starting lineup by seniors, didn't let the raucous crowd, the travel or sleeping in a strange bed bother him.

McLemore scored 22 points and No. 9 Kansas proved it was more than just a bully at home by beating seventh-ranked Ohio State 74-66 on Saturday.

"This was great. It was my first time playing in an away game," McLemore said with a slight smile. "You go up and down the court a little bit, and you get into the game. I kept my intensity, I just played my game."

For that matter, none of the Jayhawks had yet played a true road game this season. Kansas, which has won nine in a row since losing to Michigan State 67-64 on Nov. 13 in Atlanta, came in 7-0 at home, with two other games played before friendly fans in nearby Kansas City.

They had barely heard a boo all season.

No wonder coach Bill Self was a little worried.

"I had concerns, for sure," Self said. "Our seniors are good and quality and they've been through some things, but against a team that pressures man-to-man and you're playing with one primarily (ball) handler? That was my biggest concern."

But the Jayhawks (10-1) weathered a 14-0 run by the Buckeyes (9-2) in the first half that turned the volume up in Value City Arena to 11 on a scale of 10. Then, down in the second half, they held cold-shooting Ohio State without a field goal for more than 10 minutes to take control.

The Buckeyes, who were led by Deshaun Thomas' 16 points and a career-best 15 by Shannon Scott, hit just 9 of 36 shots from the field in the final 20 minutes. For the game, they ended up making only 31 percent of their shots from the field.

No wonder coach Thad Matta looked so stunned when he spoke after the game.

"There was one point in the second half where I turned to the bench and I said, 'Hey, let's call a play where we score,'" he said, heavy on the irony. "A lot of it just comes down to you've got to put the ball in the basket in a game like this and we couldn't do it. It became contagious."

Sixty percent of the starting lineup ? star defender Aaron Craft, usually reliable Lenzelle Smith Jr. and post man Evan Ravenel ? was a combined 5 of 24 from the field.

Credit the Jayhawks, who play withering man-to-man defense and then are backed up by the incredible wingspan of 7-foot Jeff Withey underneath. Or blame the Buckeyes, who frequently were all alone when they bricked a shot off the rim. But no matter the reason, Ohio State couldn't buy a bucket for most of the second half.

It was the third victory for the Jayhawks in little more than a year over the Buckeyes (9-2). Kansas won a 64-62 thriller in last year's NCAA semifinals.

"Today's probably the best we've played against Ohio State in the three games," Self said. "We were really good except for about a 3-minute stretch in the first half when they went on a (14-0) run. Other than that stretch, that was a pretty good 35 minutes we played out there."

Withey added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Jayhawks. Elijah Johnson had 13 points and Travis Releford 11.

They weathered Ohio State's first-half tear by relying on the seniors.

"We have a good group of vets and we've been in tough situations before," Withey said. "We just bounced back. We just had to kind of breathe a little bit."

Ahead 56-52 with 7 minutes left, Kansas pulled away thanks to its McLemore. He hit a pair of foul shots and then flipped in a 15-foot jumper that bounced not once, not twice, but three times before falling through. Off an inbounds pass, McLemore then came off a back pick and dunked to push the lead to 62-52 with 5 minutes left.

The Buckeyes never got closer than six points again.

Self said he found out a little more about McLemore in the game.

"There's a lot of stuff I'm curious about Ben," he said. "He's still trying to figure out how to play. You can tell in late-game situations, he's played less basketball than anybody that's as old as him and as good as him around. It's all new to him. When it all comes naturally to him, he's going to become terrific."

In his first road game, he already was.

Escaped robber who rappelled 20 stories caught

Scott Olson / Getty Images

The escape of the two bank robbers from Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center left some people scratching their heads. The pair rappelled about 20 stories on a rope made of bed sheets

By NBC News wire services and NBCChicago.com

CHICAGO -- One of two bank robbers who escaped a high-rise federal jail Tuesday by scaling down some 20 stories on a rope made from bed sheets has been arrested after an FBI manhunt, the agency said early Friday.

FBI spokeswoman Joan Hyde said Joseph "Jose" Banks was captured without incident in Chicago. Agents from the Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force, along with officers from the Chicago Police Department, arrested Banks about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Hyde said in a news release.

The search continued for Kenneth Conley, who fled the jail with Banks.

Banks, 37, and Conley, 38, somehow broke a large hole into the bottom of a 6-inch-wide window of the Metropolitan Correctional Center, dropped out their makeshift rope and climbed down about 20 floors to the ground.

The escape went unnoticed for hours, with surveillance video from a nearby street showing the two hop into a cab shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday. They had changed out of their orange jail-issued jumpsuits.

When the facility did discover the two men were gone around 7 a.m., what was found revealed a meticulously planned escape, including clothing and sheets shaped to resemble a body under blankets on beds, bars inside a mattress and even fake bars in the cells.

Bank robbers use rope made of cloth scraps to escape jail

A massive manhunt involving state, federal and local law enforcement agencies was launched, as SWAT teams stormed into the home of a relative of Conley only to learn the two escapees had been there and left. The authorities searched other area homes and businesses ? even a strip club where Conley once worked.

'Second-Hand Bandit'
Law enforcement officials left a host of questions unanswered, including how the men could collect about 200 feet of bed sheets and what they might have used to break through the wall of the federal facility.

Banks, known as the Second-Hand Bandit because he wore used clothes during his heists, was convicted last week of robbing two banks and attempting to rob two others. Authorities say he stole almost $600,000, and most of that still is missing.

During trial, he had to be restrained because he threatened to walk out of the courtroom. He acted as his own attorney and verbally sparred with the prosecutor, at times arguing that U.S. law didn't apply to him because he was a sovereign citizen of a group that was above state and federal law.

Prisoner escapes, found in hospital vent less than an hour later

Conley pleaded guilty last October to robbing a Homewood Bank last year of nearly $4,000. Conley, who worked at the time at a suburban strip club, wore a coat and tie when he robbed the bank and had a gun stuffed in his waistband.

The Metropolitan Correctional Center, located in Chicago's Loop, has been the site of escape attempts before.?

Fugitive who escaped from prison more than 31 years ago finally caught

The brother of "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan pleaded guilty in 2010 for trying to escape the jail using a rope made of bed sheets.

Matthew Nolan planned to rappel down the side of the building using a 31-foot rope of bed sheets that he had hidden in a mattress, NBCChicago.com reported, adding that in 1985, two men?escaped by shimmying down a 75-foot extension cord they threw out the window.

Escape carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, authorities said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

CIA: ?Zero Dark Thirty? not a realistic portrayal of hunt for Osama bin Laden

The CIA says scenes of torture in the new film 'Zero Dark Thirty' are not an accurate portrayal of the hunt for Osama bin Laden. This follows similar criticism from three senior US Senators who say the film is 'grossly inaccurate and misleading'.

In an unusual letter to CIA employees, the agency?s acting director Michael Morrell says the controversial Hollywood film ?Zero Dark Thirty? takes ?significant artistic license? with the years-long hunt that led to Navy SEALs killing terrorist leader Osama bin Laden and is ?not a realistic portrayal of the facts.?

It?s not the first official complaint about the movie.

Earlier in the week, three senior US Senators ? Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein, fellow Democrat Carl Levin and Republican John McCain ? sent a letter to Michael Lynton, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, in which they expressed their ?deep disappointment? with the film for its ?grossly inaccurate and misleading ? suggestion that torture resulted in information that led to the location of Osama bin Laden.?

?Regardless of what message the filmmakers intended to convey, the movie clearly implies that the CIA?s coercive interrogation techniques were effective in eliciting important information related to a courier for Osama bin Laden,? the senators wrote. ?We have reviewed CIA records and know that this is incorrect.?

?The fundamental problem,? they continue, ?is that people who see Zero Dark Thirty will believe that the events it portrays are facts?. Recent public opinion polls suggest that a narrow majority of Americans believe that torture can be justified as an effective form of intelligence gathering. This is false. We know that cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of prisoners is an unreliable and highly ineffective means of gathering intelligence.?

No one know this better than Senator McCain, a former Navy pilot who spent years as a POW in North Vietnam, where he was subjected to brutal torture used to elicit false confessions.

'Zero Dark Thirty': top 3 controversies surrounding the Osama bin Laden film

In his letter to CIA employees, acting director Morrell (who took over from disgraced director David Petraeus), does not say that waterboarding and other forms of what the agency calls ?enhanced interrogation? did not occur during the hunt for bin Laden.

He acknowledges that such methods, which critics say amount to torture, were part of the agency?s ?former detention and interrogation program.? (In ?Zero Dark Thirty,? these are graphically shown as water-boarding, being hung from a ceiling, beatings, sleep deprivation, and being locked in a coffin-like box.)

But Morrell takes issue with the film?s portrayal of prisoner abuse and the role it played in the Bin Laden mission.

?The film creates the strong impression that the enhanced interrogation techniques that were part of our former detention and interrogation program were the key to finding Bin Laden.?That impression is false,? Morrell writes. ?As we have said before, the truth is that multiple streams of intelligence led CIA analysts to conclude that Bin Laden was hiding in Abbottabad.?Some came from detainees subjected to enhanced techniques, but there were many other sources as well.?And, importantly, whether enhanced interrogation techniques were the only timely and effective way to obtain information from those detainees, as the film suggests, is a matter of debate that cannot and never will be definitively resolved.?

Earlier this month, the Senate Intelligence Committee voted 9-6 to approve a classified report highly critical of the CIA?s detention and interrogation program.

?I strongly believe that the creation of long-term, clandestine ?black sites? and the use of so-called ?enhanced-interrogation techniques? were terrible mistakes,? committee chairman Feinstein said regarding the report. ?The majority of the Committee agrees.?

Based on their view that this element of ?Zero Dark Thirty? is ?grossly inaccurate and misleading,? Senators Feinstein, Levin, and McCain say Sony Pictures Entertainment has ?an obligation to state that the role of torture in the hunt for Osama bin Laden is not based on the facts, but rather part of the film's fictional narrative."

aldanochristian: What are Monnucleosis ? Reference and Education ...

December 9th, 2012 by admin

Enlargement of the spleen, sometimes also called acute splenic tumor occurs in any blood-borne infection and is a particularly prominent feature of infective endocarditis. The enlargement is a consequence of ?acute congestion, eticuloendothelial hyperplasia, and lymphoid hyperplasia. ?The splenic reaction in these infections may he caused not only by the microbiologic agents themselves but also by the products of the inflammatory disease. Obviously, acute splenitis is also encountered in many specific infections, but these histologic changes usually provide some clue to the nature of the infection, as for example the striking reticuloendothelial hyperplasia and erythrophagocytosis in typhoid fever or the characteristic ?mononucleosis?cells? in infectious mononucleosis. ?ICD-10 education.?makes you spend more time with patients and increase the quality of the care.

AT&T Galaxy S II getting a 4.0.4 update

GSII OTA

The AT&T Galaxy S II got updated to Ice Cream Sandwich this past June, but tonight there are reports of users getting a slight version bump to Android 4.0.4. The LK3 update can be retrieved from Kies, but luckily users are saying they downloaded it OTA as well.

There is no change log available, and so far nobody has found much difference from 4.0.3. We doubt that the Exynos patch is included, but we'll have to wait until more people get it installed so someone can check. Of course even the smallest bug fixes and security adjustments are appreciated.

Proposed amendment on public benefit of religion ... - Civil Society

Peter Bone, MP for Wellingborough and Rushden

Some 166 MPs yesterday voted in favour of allowing Peter Bone MP to introduce a ten minute rule bill aimed at amending the Charities Act to reinstate the presumption of public benefit for religious institutions.

Just seven voted against.

As a result, the bill was presented and read for the first time, and the second reading was scheduled for 1 March 2013.

A total of 116 - 70 per cent - of the bill?s supporters were Conservative MPs.

Bone opened his address to the House of Commons yesterday by declaring that on Monday he delivered a letter to the Prime Minister signed by 113 MPs from different parties, urging the government to restore the presumption of charitable status to all religious groups.

The removal of the presumption in the Charities Act, he said, had had the ?unintended consequence of the state being able to interfere, through the Charity Commission, with religious institutions?.

He went on: ?The Act clearly states?that the advancement of religion should be considered a charitable purpose. Surely, if the advancement of religion is considered to be a charitable purpose, the presumption to grant religious institutions charitable status is the logical action to be taken by the Charity Commission, but the current commissioners are determined to misinterpret the law.

?How can a group active in the role of advancing religion that contains more than 16,000 members of the British public not be considered a public benefit??

Bone cited as ?most extraordinary? one statement from the Commission?s ruling on the Plymouth Brethren case - ?There is no presumption that religion generally, or at any more specific level, is for the public benefit, even in the case of Christianity or the Church of England.?

?There we have it,? Bone said, ?not even the Church of England is safe.?

He continued: ?I am reminded of the poem ?First they came?, describing the persecution of different groups, in darker times. Today it could be amended to read: ?First they came for the Plymouth Brethren and I did not speak out because I was not a Brethren.? Then they came for the Evangelical Church and I did not speak out because I was not an Evangelical. Then they came for the Catholic Church and I did not speak out because I was not a Catholic. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me?.?

Bone warned that if the presumption of charitable status for religious bodies is not restored, the consequences will be detrimental to the ?very fabric of our society?.

It is an ?almightly mess?, he concluded, and for a change it has not been caused by either the Liberal Democrats or the European Union, but by the ?creeping secularism in society?.

*Editor's note: The Charity Commission has asked us to point out that the decision that there is no presumption that religion is for the public benefit was made by the Upper Tribunal, not by the Commission. Peter Bone MP has been made aware of his misattribution. ?
